Guest guest
Hi Sheila, my 22 year old daughter was diagnosed last summer after having a TSH of 15. She was put onto Levothyroxine at a dose of 50mcg daily. She then moved away from home and changed doctors. She wasnt taking the Levothyroxine regularly and told the new doctor. Her next TSH result was 4.7 and so he told her that she didnt need to take it any more. She still has many hypo symptoms such as hair loss, bad memory and feeling cold, weight gain etc. She has moved back home and is now back at the original group of GPs. She has had another blood test and all they will tell her is that it is normal and they are refusing to put her back on Levothyroxine again. I am concerned that if she doesnt take any Levo (which the original GP said she would be on for life) her TFTs will go out of range again and she will end up as ill as she was last year. I am going to try to get her to see the GP who originally put her on Levothyroxine, but his appointments are very hard to get and he is due to retire very soon. Do you have any advice about what to say to this doctor to persuade him to put her back on? She has already tried the list of symptoms, and crying !!! Its crazy isnt it. One GP said that her depression was causing the hypothyroidism. I thought it was the other way round! They want to put her on antidepressants, but not Levothyroxine. I think it is appalling that you have to work out what to say to a GP in order to get treatment that you need. And if he says NO, what can we do then? I know they should take into account a patients symptoms and not just the results of a blood test, but its hard to tell a GP that! Any help will be gratefully received. Many thanks, Jo
