Guest guest
Hannah, I had this problem, and sometimes when it is cold and windy, I still have this problem. However, I have found what works best for me is MSM eye drops http://www.dry-eyes.co.uk/acatalog/MSM_Eye_Drops.html .. I also put Vaseline on my eyelids when I went to bed. Now somebody is going to come along and tell me we shouldn't be doing this because Vaseline is petroleum jelly and could cause damage, but I can assure you that in all the years I have been using it, it never affected me or damaged my eyes in any way. It has only done good and I would not be without it. Keeps wrinkles away from eyes also. By applying a thin layer over closed eyelids it stops them from crusting so therefore no more scratching because of the stinging, and you will find any redness fades. Use the MSM drops during the day and if possible, when going out in these present freezing temperatures, wear large sunglasses to protect your eyes further. And yes, it is a hypothyroid problem. I used to have eyedrops prescribed by my GP but whatever he prescribed, they never worked like the MSM and Vaseline. Luv - Sheila Does anyone have any experience with this problem? I have VERY dry and scratchy eyes on and off a lot - makes me feel like I constantly want to shut them and they sting quite a bit too. Feel like I haven't slept at all when I have! Is this a hypothyroid problem and is there anything that can be done about it. I'm on T3 only (30mcg) and it hasn't done anything to alleviate the problem as yet. Is it something that gets better with treatment? Am I resigned to eyedrops for the rest of my life?! Hannah
Guest guest
couold it be vitamin A deficiency ? (not beta carotene, vitamin a) have you googled whether any other deficiencies can affect your eyes? > > Does anyone have any experience with this problem? Guest guest
i agree with chris ..hypos apparently have trouble with beta carotone to vitamin a conversion and from what i have picked up (and experienced) dry eyes are yet another symptom of low thyroid. (the muscoal linings don't get the nourishment they need). http://www.energeticnutrition.com/source_naturals/vitamin-A-palmitate.html http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-vitamin-malabsorption.htm at the back of my mind i also have a feeling that being low in one or two of the b vits might be implicated (i will have to search for that info though). besy wishes trish > > Does anyone have any experience with this problem? Guest guest
I have had a lot of problems with dry eyes and dry mouth. Since being on T3 again, my mouth is OK. Eyes improved but not right. Hypromellose eye drops is what I use at the moment. Lacrilube ointment when they were very dry. Plus my eyes produce this stringy sticky white stuff. Once I remove that, my eyes feel much better. I bookmarked those other eye drops that were mentioned. Does anybody elses eyes produce this stringy sticky white stuff? Guest guest
I to have dry eyes but I also wear contact lenses so have suitable eye drops. This week however I had a very sore eye and went to the optitianns and he diagnosed a deep corneal ulcer for which I have antibiotic cream> when I mentioned I was Hypothyroid he said that my eyes had nothing to do with that. > > Does anyone have any experience with this problem? Guest guest
HI HANNAH I was sent to an eye specialist as I experiance blurred vision in the night sometimes and they feel like I have grit in them at times. Iwas told that the gland does not produce enough fluid and to use eye drops. I have to wonder if my arthritas causes them to feel like they have grit in them, but in turn use eye drops. My opticion told me to boil some water and add a little bicarbonate of soda, and let the water cool and bathe the outside of the eyes with it. I also have a floater which at first bothered me as it felt like a fly in front of my eye. I looked in the mirror and could not see anything in the eye, but it was still in my vision and still is. Its due to a opaciity, and nothingcan be done, but more could occur. You can also get calcium deposits in the eyes. I do not wear and would not wear contact lenses. Guest guest
Hi - I've left in the previous threads as they both relate to this. I too am hypothyroid and have had similar symptoms. I also wear soft 'silicon' contact lenses. It felt like there was grit under the lens and even when I took lenses out. Got so bad I couldn't wear them and eyelid was puffy, eye red streaming & nose running. Other eye was gritty too. Doctor said there is an 'epidemic' of VIRAL conjuncivitis going around and I was the 5th person he'd seen with it that day. Said to carry on with bathing eye in Optrex. Gave me a scrip for antibiotics when I mentioned autoimmune thyroid probs 'in case it got any worse' but said not directly related to it. I also used Tescos own brand eye drops which have a natural antibiotic action and can be used with contact lenses. Was better in about 3 days but eyes have been occasionally still gritty and sore in morning and by end of day so use the drops at night and they really help. Can't remember the exact name of the drops - there are several different ones. Let me know if you want the name. Cheers > > > > Does anyone have any experience with this problem? Guest guest
Hi Hannah Yes I am sure your eyes should improve over time. I had very sore eyes before I was diagnosed. I have tried to describe this symptom before and its quite tricky but when I was trying to get to sleep and had my eyes shut it seemed as though the black was swirling and constantly moving. I had a detached vitreous and had to attend an emergency eye appointment. I had a floater I thought, I have loads anyway. I was given Lacrilube for the night and Hypromelose drops in the day. I have much better eyes now and only use drops now and then. Luv Stephie > Is this a hypothyroid problem and is there anything that can be done about it.
