Hi Jot,

I've been looking into the Bromide issue of late. Can anybody clear this up? -

I've had a look at various breads and bromide or potassion bromide etc. does not

seem to be listed. Why is this when all articles about Bromide state that

bromide is used in bread?

I've been trying to eat wheat free bread and found a really nice one by Gennius

but I'm not sure whether this has bromide in or not if it's not getting listed

on the ingredients in general.

The UK banned bromate in bread in 1990.

Canada banned bromate in bread in 1994. (23)

Proposal P230 in Australia: Food Regulation Ministerial Council (FSANZ)still has

not finalized its July 2007 proposal to mandate iodized salt in breads,

breakfast cereals and biscuits.

Back in 1999, the Center for Science in the Public Interest petitioned the FDA

to prohibit the use of potassium bromate, charging that the FDA has known for

years that bromate causes cancer in lab animals, but has failed to ban it. (24)

As of September 2007, the US FDA responded to Breast Cancer Choices inquiry with

the statement, " Potassium Bromate is still listed as a safe additive. "

It will say either Bromine or Bromide if it is in there...(well at least it is

supposed too) If you buy organic breads they usually will not have bromide in

them because they know not to use it. But, advertising is really sneaky and they

seem to get away with a lot of crap. Here in the US people actually believe that

Cheerios are good for your heart, because that's how they're advertised.

And now that they've started putting sea salt in soup, they are advertising that

as a good thing. Of course, it isn't because the sea salt they are using is

unprocessed/unrefined salt.

Call the company or look them up on the web to see if they have everything

listed. I email every company for extra info. Sometimes they will actually give

you the truth. :0)

Hi Jot,

Have you got this the wrong way round? I understood unprocessed, unrefined

salt was good. It's the refined stuff which we don't need to take.....

.

The sea salt they are using is processed/refined salt. The salt

that is good for you is Unprocessed and Unrefined.

They aren't putting unrefined/unprocessed sea salt in soup. That's what I meant

to put across. I think it came out weird. They are putting regular, processed

sea salt in soup. The regular sea salt is just as bad as the regular salt.

MOre than any other thing, I need to educate people on the proper

unrefined/unprocessed sea salt vs the processed sea salt. It's a very difficult

job here because the packaging will say that it is unprocessed, but if it is

white, it is processed. I think people get themselves into trouble not

understanding the difference, and not paying attention to detail. If one doesn't

keep their wits about them, they're going to make mistakes....

And trying to explain to people about this soup, just about drives me batty. :0)

Yes I'm in the UK.

Thanks for clearing that up - no bromide in bread anymore, I still try and avoid

it/go easy on it because of the wheat thing.
