Yusuf:

I am not sure the time of the day matters that much. I am of the philosophy

that it is more important to take it after a meal (full stomach), with a

full glass of water and at a time where you will be upright for the next

several

hours.

That is why I take mine after breakfast and at a time where I will be the

most active. The worst for me was taking it right before bedtime where I would

be laying down after I took the medicine, although I have read where other

people prefer it that way.

Ultimately, you will have to try the things that make it easier for you to

manage your side effects. How long have you been taking Gleevec?

Shalyn:

There are many things you can do to limit the side effects. I made a post

on Sunday night that covers a lot of these.

My first oncologist did not recommend Gleevec, said that I would need a Bone

Marrow Transplant and said Gleevec would not help. I had a friend who put

me in touch with his client who had Leukemia and it ends up that this same

doctor misdiagnosed him. It was the Leukemia Society who indirectly got

information to me that the course of action was wrong.

It is my understanding that you need a Hematologist/Oncologist to fully

understand Leukemia. However, all the cutting edge stuff is being done at the

Leukemia Clinics like MD , Dana Farber, and the like. Here is a link

to the NCI page that outlines Cancer Institutes by state. It is best to get a

second opion at one of them.

_Click here: NCI - Cancer Centers Program - Cancer Centers List_

I go to MD and they set my treatment protocols. My oncologist

reviews what they suggest and goes through and follows those protocols. I have

my biopsies and aspirations done there once a year and my oncologist is just

there to help me between visits.

Good luck. Let me know if I can be of help.

Thanks Matt- for all your Gleevec taking tips. My husband Tim starts

his Gleevec tomorrow and we are using your tips. He has alot of acid

reflux issues so morning will likely be best - just got to get him to

eat a full meal. He begins a new job today (oh boy eh?) and is leading

a big group (oh boy twice!) That being said , we hope the side effects

are minimal but he did get a rx for anti-nauseau drugs.

We have little faith in his hematologist. We have little faith i

that?? She has only had 2 other CML patients and seems to know very

little about Gleevec - side effects or things you should not be taking

with...Is it reasonable to request a different Dr?? Has anyone here

done this? We are in an amazing cancer treatment province - so I feel

we should have the advantages to this. Anyhow- sorry for blabbing on

here- just red lights going up about care.

Thanks

I take mine at the same time each day (or try too). It helps me to remember it.

If I switched it around, I would probably forget.

Hello, Yusuf. I typically take my Gleevec around the same time

every day -- after my evening meal. Sometimes, if I have a big

lunch and I don't anticipate having a large dinner, I will take it

after lunch. (If I've had a large lunch, I don't like feeling

obligated to also have a big dinner.) For me, I have to take my

Gleevec after a good-size meal, along with an anti-nausea

medication.) My doctor has never addressed whether it's necessary

to take it the same time each day. Hope this helps. Warmest

regards. (Dov)

Matt,

I've been taking gleevec for 7 months. And ,thanks God, i have a good

response. I believe that taking it at the same time everyday makes a positive

effect to the treatment. And as you say its very important too, to take it after

meal. But also it can cause nausea if you take it with a very full stomach. Of

course these are just my opinions depend on my experiences at last 7 months.

Yusef,

Try and take your Gleevec around the same time every day. Gleevec has a half

life about 18 hours. This way your levels stay about the same. I always take

mine after dinner.

Hi Shalyn,

Having an experienced CML doctor is critical. Even if you have to travel

to see one. It will be the most important move you make.

Once you have established a relationship with the CML expert, you can

let your local doctor monitor you, but any change in treatment would

need to be discussed and approved by the expert.

I was in a clinical trial in Portland, OR in 2001 with Dr. Druker and

Dr. Mauro. Even though I am no longer being followed by them, any time I

have a question, they are quick to respond.
