Guest guest
Bridget gets the summer off. We swim, go to the playground, zoo, have private therapy, etc... Bridget does not seem to regress much. She enjoys the break. Getting her to school is a hassle, so we enjoy relaxing mornings for a change. We even take a break from therapy occasionally to get a fresh start. Typically she will miss 3 sessions in a row and be ready to go back with a renewed since of energy for trying. mom to Bridget 12 wife to in upstate SC Re: ESY >As for the PT,OT,ST, I would ask if services are provided over the summer. > >Nina Mom to Tiana age 9 and AShlee age 6 (CwDS) (who has her IEP tomorrow!) > > She could receive these services, but it's once or twice per week for 4 weeks, so the hassle of either getting transportation set up for such a short time (transportation can never find our house, takes them weeks to get it right) OR me driving her across the district to the school where services are given (20-25 min drive each way, depending on the school.... and ESY is ALWAYS at the newer schools on the other side of town). Did this last year, and it was a waste of time. Plus, it always interferres with swimming lessons, which I also thought were valuable lessons :-) or going to the beach (which I only do on " beach days " when a group of us take our kids together..... I don't take my brood alone, especially my runner!) Good luck tomorrow at your IEP.... we'll be there too, 8 am, hashing out behavior goals, evaluations for the trienial, and other stuff. , mom to (9), (7 DS), and (5) Click reply to all for messages to go to the list. Also, what about gettting them to pay a tutor during the summer (say 3x/week for 1 1/2 hour, 5 weeks)???? --- That is certainly one option (although they probably won't like it due to expense!) One summer I strictly opted for them providing Speech and OT (I transported her for those sessions). I've supplemented with regular Parks & Recs programs (at my own expense). Do I have any basis for asking for this, and if so, what might it be? If she is fully included in a regular class, with no resource pullouts (only speech, OT, and APE), AND they agree she need/would benefit from ESY, are they not obligated to provide it in her agreeded upon LRE? -- in theory, although it goes outside the " box " of what they are use to providing, and you'll probably have an uphill climb. But do feel free to make them jump through the hoops on LRE. Legally she should have the same model she gets during the school year. If they will not provide a tutor, can I make them provide me with a summer curriculum, including books, worksheets, etc????? - ---- Yes. BTW last summer I had go to the local ESY special class for a hour a day ONLY to spend time on her Edmark program. After the 4 weeks were up they offered to lend me the computer program at home. I was able to install it on our home computer where we now have it permanently. She is using it at school too so this is working out great (we can reinforce both ways!) This year has a new Special Ed teacher who told me about a summer program I had never heard of before. The teacher used to work there past summers so that's why she knows about it. In the morning the Special Ed kids meet to do academics and in the afternoon they participate in a regular Parks and Recs program with supports. We are having the ESY meeting in a couple of weeks to approve placement. We will be meeting on Thursday, and I'm sure this will come up, so please, give me some ideas! Guest guest
went to summer school for several weeks each year while he was in preschool. By the time he was in regular elementary he was busy with swimming every day and that school was too far away. We both needed a rest. But his teachers always told me that he retained what he learned better than the regular kids. He was always ready to pick up right where they left off in everything so I felt the change was good for both of us. Of course, every child is different. Guest guest
Hi all, Could someone clarify or does anyone know for sure whether the six weeks of summer school is a hard and fast amount that is available. We used to have summer school almost the entire summer, then two years ago the district suddenly said that the rule was 6 weeks only, and they cut the number of hours that we could receive, almost in half. We balked and got 7 weeks total, but only 3 hours a day, four days a week. I would like more if possible but don't know the regulations surrounding ESY. Thanks in advance, Lynda Rands
Guest guest
I'm so glad you will have some quiet this morning...I'm drinking my coffee too, and was also just noticing how quiet my home is....My dad is taking Lily to tutoring (reading) on his way out, he asked if could come along for the ride...he's usually so busy that he doesn't offer (he's good just busy, busy) --- anyhow I couldn't get "yes" out of my mouth fast enough lol...I have 30 more minutes...yippee!!!! Have a great day, and my money is on you that you will handle the bus thing j From: karenrichard2000 <karenrichard2000@...>autism Sent: Thursday, July 2, 2009 8:07:17 AMSubject: ESY Hi all, is finally on the bus and gone. The house is VERY quiet.School started at 8:15, bus was supposed to be here at 8:06, (yes school is only a couple of miles away), calling transportation only got the message that I had reached them and their hours were 7AM - 4PM, I know this, I think to myself, after-all IT'S AFTER 8AM.Bus finally got here as I was dressing to take him to school. We could have some problems here. He is supposed to be door to door, which means stop in front of the house not across the street. They were across the street. I counted at least 6 heads on the bus, according to the IEP 3 at most. I think I will get my ducks in a row (if I can find them in one of ALL these boxes still all over the place from the move) and speak so "nicely" to them, but first I am going to relax with a nice cup of coffee and a smoke on the porch, while I watch the rain continue to fall.So much fun.
