Guest guest
That was very interesting. Thank you for al the information. Great question. Now my question is ... when you are weaning your baby from breast milk -- what are your suggestions?

My daughter drinks rice milk, and gets protein, fats and calcium (which she would be getting from cow milk) from other, healthier sources. The autism book I am reading has a simple recipe if you want it.Also there is some type of potato drink called Darifree.Don't know the nutritional content of that though. In blender 1 cup brown rice(cooked) and 4c water. When smooth add 1/4 tsp salt and 1tsp vanilla extract or sugar may be added for flavor.Let sit for 1 hour then pour through sieve.Put in fridge and shake before using.Use sweet brown rice for extra sweetness(never saw this at my hfs) sara

We also always get the enriched, as there are two kinds. Don't get it in a regular grocery store. Here is is 50 cents more there. We got if for a while inthe health food store, alittle cheaper but the cheapest is through an organic food buying group I found, it's 21.00 a case. Guest guest
I love Rice Dream. I can't stand cow's milk or soy milk at all, but I love Rice Dream. Having inadvertently gotten my breast milk on my hand and licked it off without thinking I must say Vanilla Rice Dream does taste a lot like breastmilk. Guest guest
Hhhmmm...So *THAT'S* why my family likes it so much! My children really like the rice dream brand. It has a very mild taste. We use the soy milk to cook with and prefer the rice milk cold, but I have used it warmed and it works well. It's great heated up for hot cocoa (you can use carob but we like a treat of chocolate sometimes). Most varieties now make a " regular " and an " plus " version that has a number of added nutrients. The kids also really like the vanilla flavour but the carob has not gone over so well. Good luck. We have tried probably every brand out there and have found very few that we didn't care for. Guest guest
We've used Rice Dream - My husband and daughters liked it, I was okay with it. Now we drink a multi grain milk from Pacific Foods - it is fairly sweet, thicker than rice milk, but not as thick as soy milk (we drank edensoy extra for years until I began investigating the concept of " enriched " or " supplemental " : vitamins/minerals which do not originate from whole foods; ed.extra is enriched with calcium, Vit.D, B12.) One more question/comment about alternative to cow milk drinks: I recently came across a blend of roasted roots (dandelion, chicory, burdock, maybe a few others) in the form of a " coffee alternative " - mix with hot water or soy/rice milk, cinnamon, etc. It was delicious. After drinking it, though, I began to wonder about the safety of drinking it while pregnant/nursing - can find no contraindications for taking the roots medicinally in pregnancy, but I was curious if any of you had experience with this funky drink :-) namaste, gretchen ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Guest guest
, We use Rice Dream Vanilla Enriched. It tastes good. The only "problem" is that it contains safflower oil instead of canola etc. - Jax, FL I've got a question... we're thinking of going no-milk, and I was wondering what you all have heard about "Rice Dream". __________________________________________________

Guest guest
, I just tried tonight some "Rice Slice" Mozzarella style cheese made by Soyco tonight. It has no dairy or soy in it. It comes in slices like American cheese does. It tasted great! I was very surprised. It does have that "plasticy" look like American cheese though. Another alternative is goats milk cheese. Most people have eaten Feta before. It's great on roasted red bell peppers! - Jax, FL Hi, I have another question... what about cheese? Is it as bad as milk? My guess is that it would be. Guest guest
I use both the Rice and Soy Dream (rice for my son) - both in the vanilla enriched. I also really like Silk from White Wave, it seems to be much more fresh. I have to say the only brand I don't like is Eden Soy - tastes like cardboard. S. Guest guest
: Sorry to rain on your parade....but I'll bet that Rice Slice Mozerella DOES have Dairy in it....scan the label for " Casein " or " Sodium Caseinate " These are two forms of the major protein found in dairy products. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I should have known better... I worked for the manufacturer/distributor of Soyakaas for 8 years! Guest guest
I personally think Rice Dream is to sweet and don't really like the taste of soy milk. But I recently found Edensoy Original in a half rice milk half soy milk blend. I ;ike it better. rebecca(SAHM Zia 4/4/00)
Guest guest
Hey gang I have a question for you. Locally I have only been able to find Rice Dream Vanilla flavor in a non-organic rice version. The plain Rice Dream lists organic rice, but the Vanilla flavor doesn't. Anyone out there found Vanilla w/organic rice? Just wondering. TIA. Guest guest
Most of those milk substitutes are too sweet for me, too, but recently I've tried Pacific brand oat milk, and really like it. It's made with only oats, water and sea salt, nothing else. Now if I could only find an organic version.
