Muse,

Cures are sold as Bone Marrow Transplants (so they say), but if you are

young the odds are greater, the older you get the odds drop.

There is no prevention because there is no explaining why the chromosomes

mutate the way they do.

My name is Pat Foundopoulos and I threw out some queries a week or so ago

about smoking, working around gasoline or anything that uses petroleum products,

because the speculation is that the mutation may occur from long exposure to

radiation, gasoline, cigarettes, and the list grows.

This is a rare disease, not common at all, but we have this web site and it

is great.

I know all the explanations you cited and yes, I agree about the energy and

resources needed to find a 'why' this happens. I remarked a week or so ago

that I wish I could find every CML patient alive today and send them a form

with a gazillion questions on life style, eating habits, nasty habits, etc.

Because somehow there has to be a common thread. I do not dwell on it, though,

I am just totally curious.

Hi Pat et al,

There may be a lot of speculation on the part of some patients, but there's

no scientific evidence that petroleum products, gasoline or cigarettes in

any way increase the risk of getting CML. The only known risk factor is

exposure to high levels of ionizing radiation (eg, nuclear bomb). You may be

thinking of AML, for which a known risk factor is benzene exposure. Some

people end up driving themselves nuts wondering what caused their CML. But

remember, even babies and children (albeit rarely) can develop CML, and I

doubt any of them dabbled in benzene.

Having said all of that, I sometimes wonder too about risk factors, and in

the past I have decried that fact that researchers seem to have nearly a

complete lack of interest in prevention of CML and study of its risk

factors, which I think is unfortunate. Sadly, now that there are medications

that can help people effectively manage CML for apparently years, there may

be even less interest in spending massive research dollars on understanding

prevention and risks when the pharmaceutical industry can rake in billions

of dollars on drugs to treat the condition. Prevention would put that line

of drugs out of business.
