Guest guest
, Good to hear from you again, I'm really sorry about Nora's foot. I wish I could help, but I haven't had any broken bones. Gretchen
Guest guest
, Sorry about Nora's break. I too have continuous stress fractures on the top of my right foot. I actually broke my foot and didn't know it was broken until it had healed wrong. Best of luck with your daughter and the doctors/ Lynn
Guest guest
: It shocked me to see someone else make this correlation. My son broke his left fibula at the age of 17, ended up with surgery due to continued use after the break (basketball/center). After this healed, he went back on the court the next year and broke his right fibula at the second game of the season. Dr.'s couldn't find a reason for this, except to say that he grew fast and his bones possibly couldn't support his body and this often happens in athletes of jumping sports. I questioned it's relationship to CMT. My son is not diagnosed, but has drop foot on the left side. These dr.'s didn't really think there was any relationship. Keep in mind, I had to explain what CMT is to them. Since then my son no longer plays basketball on a regular basis. Just a pick up game here and there and then he pays with the pain it causes. We live in fear that it will happen again. Basketball was his first love and hard to put into prospective. Now he is pre-med tho, maybe research. Guest guest
Our doctor told me that with out muscle to cushion the bone it can break easier. Spencer is going on broken leg number 2. I think that if the bone is fed by the muscle, the muscle fed by the nerve, the nerve unhealthy, it would lead to weaker bone. I hope I am wrong tho. Guest guest
The answer to that is for me, yes. I broke my ankle just by going off balance unfortunately for me I have no feeling from my knees down so I never knew it I found out quite by accident when my doctor notice my ankle bone looked out of place. I hope you go have this checked out. Cathleen in Arkansas
Guest guest
Hi ann, I think you maybe on to something. In the cold my circulation is very slow, my feet get very cold. So I think it would be very possible that cold feet can slow down healing. Since you need good circulation to heal. Good for you ! You figured something out! Guest guest
ann, Sorry to hear about the slow bone healing. I am wondering if the bone is just extra slow healing because it was previously broken and thus weakend. I don't know if you have any foot muscle atropy or not - but muscle atrophy can lead to a reduced production of heat - the body temperature is primarily maintained by heat production from muscles, so if we lose the muscle there is reduced heat output. I will check on heat further to stimulate your bone; I had an electrical stimulator implanted for awhile after back surgery to help the bone heal and it did in record time. Even I was surprised. I hope you are also keeping your entire body warm too. Warm food, warm drinks, warm socks, etc. Have you got an electric mattress pad/and or electric blanket? If I've got this right, it has been 3 months for this bone to heal - coming up on 4. It does seem like quite a long time, but if you are up and around on it, or not casted, or in a boot of some kind, this may be causing slower healing. Are you keeping the foot elevated? At this point, I would suggest a return to your doctor - did your doctor prescribe the bone stimulator? Maybe an Xray now at this stage is in order. Guest guest
I just wanted to ask if anyone could remind me about the issue with CML, gleevec, and broken bones. I recall vaguely some past discussions/comments about this, but I can't remember what was said. I was dx dec 03, remission june04 and in the past two years have had three broken bones. Prior to my diagnosis I never had any breaks. Any thoughts on this? chris in Minn
Guest guest
Hi From what I recall, the issue with bone density is that because Gleevec has a tendency to lower phosphorus levels, it can affect the density of our bones making them more brittle since phosphorus plays a role in bone regeneration. I had my first bone density test a few months ago (I'm only 36 yrs old) and it showed that I was starting the early stages of osteopenia. Now keep in mind that I was never a milk drinker and I'm sure I didn't get my required daily intake of calcium for most of my life anyway so how much of this is Gleevec related and how much is as a result of my own neglect, I don't know. I think it's wise for all of us to have a baseline bone density test so we can keep track of it. In spite of my soft bones, I've never actually broken anything, not before Gleevec and not in the 4.5 years that I've been taking it. However, I broke two ribs within the past year, and have no idea how it happened. It also did not show up on CatScan/MRI, it took an old fashioned x-ray to find it. The bone breaks very easily, and so I have to be extremely careful not to fall, or play sports, heavy chores, etc. For example, I was told never to mow the lawn again with my hand mower, things like that.
