Guest guest
Though we have tried to keep our group non-political, it is almost impossible to avoid some mention of the need to advocate politically, especially in Illinois, where the state falls SO short of meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities who desire supports and services to live life in his/her own community. The short answer Jenni is, yes, I do believe that letters from each and every member of this group to your specific local legislators and to the four leaders (snail mail, fax or email) would make a difference. Your personal stories are powerful and you and your spouses and close family members and friends are voters. You do matter to your legislators and to the Governor. Whether you support an increase in taxes or not, a letter expressing your outrage at the lack of bureacratic and political will in Illinois to address the needs of its most vulnerable citizens and your personal reasons why this matters to you and adding a comment about your contempt for the way this past legislative session was handled would be most useful. The more letters sent, the more attention will be paid to them. Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... RE: Edit Letter Good for you Ellen! While I'm hesitant to raise taxes, not having much income between my husband and myself to raise our family of four, I can certainly see your point. If only the legislators could get their act together. Reading 's posting makes me wonder, why do we have to send children with developmental disabilities to Wisconsin or Kansas? Why don't we have those services here? Because of the politics, plain and simple. ly, I find it nauseating. I don't post much. My DS is 7 and has high functioning Asperger's Syndrome but I read here and learn a lot about what to expect down the road. Do I worry that he won't go to college? Yes. He's certainly smart enough. Do I worry about how he'll be out on his own? Yes. I think he can do it, but behavior is the issue. It stinks that the little bit of services that exist now may not be here when he truly needs them. I like your letter. If we all wrote one like it, would we be heard? Maybe. Just maybe. Guest guest
I totally agree and heard once that one letter is thought of like 100 because so many people do have the time or take the time to write.
