I live in the Downers Grove area. Bascially, I'm looking for 'room

mates' for Angel. I'm not in a hurry now, but if I knew a couple of

families who wanted to do this, we could make plans and pick a futre

date to implement it.

We live in Elmhurst so if you get any parents of male young adults I

would be interested in checking this out with others. I do know

other young adults males with DS that may be interested too. Shirley

I have a 19 year old daughter who also will need supervision. We are

not ready yet but I think it is never too early to start. Perhaps

those interested could meet. Most importantly we need to see if our

individuals get along. So perhaps we could start socializing and see

where it goes. I live in the Joliet area, but would be willing to

travel some distance.

I think that if we get a group going, we can discuss more than one

household, one for girls and one for boys. I think most parents

would want them separated.

Meeting sounds like a good idea. So far, we have one in Elmhurst,

one in Carol Stream, one in Joliet and I'm in Downers Grove. Now

this morning, the Speech therapists at SASED got all of the parents

of the multi needs students to meet at a Panera Break for breakfast.

This worked out great.

1) Who is interested

2) Meet daytime/nighttime/weekends

3) Age and sex of your child.

4) Suggest a place good to meet at

, Wow!!! I can't believe so many people are thinking along the same lines! We are interested in supervised housing at some point also. My daughter is 17 and we also are in no hurry for her to leave, but if we want to do this right we might want to start planning now! I would love to get together and brainstorm at some point. We live in south Naperville. We have talked about purchasing a townhouse or something with a few roommates and all sharing the supervision and costs. The whole gated community, like a retirement complex, sounds great too. Anybody know a contactor willing to finance one for us all!!?? Does anybody know if there is state funding to help supervise a privately purchased residence? I am a teacher and will be retiring in 6 or 7 years. I was thinking that I would be available to help supervise a place in all my spare time then.

, get out of my head! WOW. We currently live in an attached

single family home. The association handles the lawn, we handle the

snow (plus exterior maintenance). My husband and I have talked about

future plans of buying a new house and possibly saving our current

one for a place for Angel and a couple of room mates could live.

I found this website through NADS. Maybe there is someone there that

could set up a face to face meeting for parents and young adults that

are interested. This is a great place to share ideas but I am sure

there are many more interested in this issue. I am sure this needs

backing if you want your child to be safe and have qualified people

to supervise, especially after you are gone. This has always been a

scary thought for me. Anyone know someone in NADS or elsewhere that

could set up a meeting?

Good thoughts, Gloria. I've always found that whereever there is

food, my daughter is happy! Perhaps our first meeting could be at a

place like Portillos (they're everywhere and have a large menu) and

get to know each other. It is very important that the room mates

like each other and that the parents have a good relationship as

well. After all, we would all be partners in this venture.

I have thought about doing something along these lines for some time now, so I would also be interested. In my case, it wouldn't be for a few years though. My son is 21, works a part-time job, and has a diagnosis of Asperger's and bipolar.
