Guest guest
Hi Diane Boy can I tell you stories! After developing totally normally and hitting all milestones my son acquired autism after getting his MMR vaccine at age 16 mos. 30 days prior to his MMR he had a nasty case of roseola, and 10 days before his MMR he had an ear infection and the day he received his vaccine he was finishing his course of antibiotics and still had a cold. About 3 months later I went to his pedi and said he is loosing language and has developed bad constipation. I was told it was all normal so I let it go... (this was back in 1987) At age 10 yrs 10 mos my son came into contact with someone who had the step virus and overnight he developed tics so severe that I thought he was having seizures. Lots of testing and family health history later he was diagnosed with PANDAS (strep induced tourettes) As a child my mother had syndhams correa (cousin to strep induced tourettes). As adults both she and her Dad (my grandpa) developed allergies to penicillin and other medications that they previously had no problems with. My daughter who is 24 has had problems since childhood with milk tolerance and has had some GI problems too. Over the last year she has suffered with a lot of body aches, head aches, sleep problems and worsening of the GI problems to constant diarrhea. She has just been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia after being testing negative for RA. She and I both think the 3 courses of the hep B (which has mercury in it ) might be connected to her developing FM. My husbands 1/2 sister developed MS in her 30s and by her early 40s she was bedridden it was so severe. My first cousin died in his late 40s from ALS (Lou Gherigs disease) Lots of Aunts, Mom, and brother all have diabetes... My family members are walking magnets for autoimmune disorders and I really worry about what else Andy might develop. Guest guest
Hi Diane: I was a little worried about a flu shot, given that my sister has Lupus, but as a nurse, I started getting flu shots years ago because it was required. My 21 year old son with autism has a great immune system (just the occasional cold) but I have chosen to give him flu shots every year for quite some time, since he is in close contact with other students and young adults. Neither of us have had any ill effects...so...the jury may still be out on all of this. Of course his autism came to the fore right around age 16 months and he did have the MMR at 15 months...causative or coincidental...who knows? Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... Autoimmune Problems Oh God- I'm not crazy AND NOT alone. Yea, those autoimmune Dz! Funny thing is 2 years ago, against my better judgement, and the coaking of my medical field colleages, I took the flu shot for the very first time. Well, you think I would have known better, as I have a son that acquired ASD after his 24 month shots right? Well, ever since, I have been dealing with aches and pains and fatique similar to Rhuematoid arthritis, but I have not been Dx officially- as it comes and goes. And developed a horrible Strep infection at that same time. So, was it the shot I got while a had a strep infection starting but not colinized enough yet to present symptoms, or did the shot itself cause my already Dx autoimmune Dz go crazy? About 6 yrs ago, I WAS officially Dx with a an autoimmune syndrome called Sjogren's (which has some similar symptoms to R. Arthritis, but never had the intensity of problems until after that wonderful (NOT!) flu shot. Is it possible to get a response from others- (who have kids with Autism related Dz), as to which parents and or close relatives have autoimmune issues? I have always wondered, and have in fact, had this conversation about 1 1/2 yrs ago with another list member. Please respond, as I would really like to know for further research related purposes. Your name is not necessary, just the Sx or named autoimmune Dz would be great if anyone feels kind enough to help. Diane S > > > > > > In a message dated 11/22/2007 8:24:36 P.M. Guest guest
I made the same decision--Russ and I both get flu shots and have since he aged out and went to an adult day agency (he's not there now--that's for another day). Hubby gets them, since he is a physician and is exposed to all sorts of nasty stuff on a regular basis. His office orders enough for all of them and us as well. We do it around Halloween. No ill affects, thus far, but the year we didn't get them (remember the shortage?), we were both got sick as dogs. Hubby got one and was fine. I think it is a case by case--and family thing. If you have problems, I believe you. Marie > > > > > > > > > In a message dated 11/22/2007 8:24:36 P.M. Guest guest
Greetings Diane and Jan! I believe autism spectrum disorders can be precipitated by immunizations in those with a genetic predisposition to autoimmune disease. I don't consider lack of colds or flu as proof of a good immune system. My 24-year old Aspie hasn't had the sniffles or an URI since he was 6 or 7, yet he is one toxic kid. My developed a continual severe diaper rash after his first shots (along with constipation, despite my breastfeeding). A month after his third DPT vaccine, a fungal infection appeared on his toenails, fingernails and underarms, which sent us off to specialists around Chicago. It took nearly 3 months before a pediatric dermatologist at the U of Chicago diagnosed psoriasis and asked to take photos of his toes and fingers to show his students. He had never seen such badly pitted nails in an infant before and was sure someone else in the family also had psoriasis (NOPE!) It would take me a further 18 years to realize what had occurred, that psoriasis wasn't just an inconvenient rash, but an aberration in immune response from T2 to T1 cytokines, an autoimmune disease. Following a meningitis vaccine received in England in 2000 (I was still blindly trusting mainstream medicine to make my health decisions for me then), again a recurring fungal infection/rash appeared on his back and trunk (resistant to many different creams and ointments). His brother, neurotypical, received the same vaccine, and was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome 6 months later. Which makes me wonder what autoimmunity lurks inside of me -- I know I had a horrible allergic reaction to penicillin in my early 20's following strep, though I had taken penicillin several times previously for strep infections. I think giving vaccines to those on the autism spectrum is playing Russian roulette. I am wiser now and take responsibility for healthcare decisions by educating myself. It is not difficult to learn the facts about vaccines -- but it does take time, an open mind and a passion for the truth, wherever it may lead. Often it leads us where we don't want to know. Guest guest
Yes, I believe, that in my son's case, his Autism is related to the many autoimmune problems in our family, specifically that he was exposed to a virus in utero that I, as his mother, was not able to protect him from due to my own compromised immune system. I have ankylosing spondolyiltis, an autoimmune arthritis in the spine. I think my son had Autism since birth. There was no regression. He didn't have language until 4 years of age and had many Autistic behaviors since birth. My brother has Type I diabetes. My nephew has ulcerative colitis. Many other cousins and relatives have Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, thyroid disorders, Diabetes, etc. Our whole family has had the flu shot for many years without any problems. Maybe I should be more concerned!! Autoimmune Problems Oh God- I'm not crazy AND NOT alone. Yea, those autoimmune Dz! Guest guest
WOW ! Your story brought back even more thoughts to me about Andy. Andy is RARELY ever ill. Nothing more than minor colds that don't even last more than a few days. Other than that his only illness has been couple of ear infections but only maybe 2 or 3 max in the last 10 years. He doesn't get stomach bugs ever (hasn't had one of those since he was maybe 7) he just doesn't get sick ever. On the other hand he has had almost constant diarrhea for 18 months. I have tried all kinds of probiotics and even tried sacromyces boulardi (a specific, and very strong type of probiotic) but nothing helps. I know this means his immune system is screwed up. Right after birth Andy had a nasty case of thrush. Over the last few years he has had a number of fungal infections on his trunk. The last time we used this lotion and got rid of it but it came back... His new GP doc says these are common but I've never even heard of anyone getting one of these. She says that after he gets rid of it if we have him wash his trunk once or twice a week with selsen blue (shampoo) it shouldn't come back. Still I think this is kind of odd. He now has something going on with the skin on his face. It looks like he is loosing his pigment (and he is fair skinned) all around his side burns and around his ear and going down towards his neck. In the right light it looks very strange. I've been wondering if that is some kind of fungal infection too... it's all very odd and I have no doubt all these things are related to his immune problems Jan **************************************Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. Guest guest
Dear Jan, Perhaps Andy's gastrointestinal problems could be addressed by Dr. Arthur Krigsman, who works with Andy Wakefield at Thoughtful House in Austin, Texas. Dr. Krigsman still has offices in New York, so you may be able to get there more easily. You can find out more about the gut/brain connection and download his presentations from conferences at this website: _www.thoughtfulhouse.org_ (http://www.thoughtfulhouse.org) There is absolutely a connection with bowel problems and immune function. My still has constipation problems, and 7 years after his meningitis vaccine. the rash on his trunk and back is undiminished. The dandruff shampoo in the bath trick only treats a symptom, it does nothing to address the reason for the skin rash, which is a shift in immune system. A natural medicine doctor recently took one look at 's chest and said " that's a vaccine reaction! " . I have been trying to locate a DAN practitioner in the Chicago area who will treat ASD adults. We have some excellent ones (Dr. Anju Usman, especially), but they are swamped with newly-diagnosed children and limit themselves to pediatrics. If anyone knows of any doctors treating young adults with a DAN protocol, please let me know! I would like to discuss this further with you off-list. Guest guest
So interesting, Pat! Especially as a nurse, I find your son's case really fascinating. I think, given your son's and others possible reactions to immunizations and others, such as my son's, totally benign experience with vaccines, that the only thing we can conclude is that there appears to be a wide range of experiences associated with immunizations. Just as our children have a very diverse behavioral and cognitive profile, so too, they have varied immunological profiles. I guess the best we can do for our children is be aware of all of the possibilities and make decisions based on our " instincts " and what we observe with our own children. To be honest, I still recommend immunizations for infants, but more widely spaced. Any signs or symptoms of autoimmune dysfunction either prior to any immunications or after SHOULD be taken seriously and might then require a rethinking about initial or further immunizations. I agree about learning facts and taking responsibility for healthcare decisions, especially with regard to our children. Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... Guest guest
DAN (Defeat Autism Now) was a think tank begun by Dr. Bernard Rimland of the Autism Research Institute to discover treatments for the medical problems related to autism. From their website: Defeat Autism Now! is dedicated to educating parents and clinicians regarding biomedically-based research, appropriate testing and safe and effective interventions for autism. Since 1995, ARI has convened recurring meetings for carefully selected physicians, researchers, and scientists committed to finding effective treatments for autism. Their work has become known as Defeat Autism Now! Parents and clinicians who do not regard psychotropic drugs as the best or only means of treating autistic patients will welcome this chance to learn effective strategies for addressing the medical illnesses associated with autism _http://www.autism.com/dan/index.htm_ (http://www.autism.com/dan/index.htm)

Guest guest
Hi fellow listmates..... In a previous email I happened to mention how the flu shot made me have worsened symptoms of an already existent autoimmune dz.... I thank everyone for their responses. I agree the jury is still out on the vaccines, flu shots etc..... Mainly what I wanted to know was- how many listmates whose kids have been Dx with ASD or related disorders, parent and or siblings and or close relatives have an autoimmune disorder? Thus making children of parents with autoimmune disorders or strong family history of autoimmune disorders as having a higher rate of having children Dx with ASD. Thanks, Diane > > > > > > > > > In a message dated 11/22/2007 8:24:36 P.M.
