I have looked in the archives and read the insert from Merck. I have a friend whose baby (2mo) is in the hospital, severely jaundiced and she just got the Hib shot. Any suggestions or remedies? But my girls had severe jaundice and had to be hospitalized for almost a week. They are part asian so that is why they explained to me that they would be so jaundiced. Am i mad now!!!! I think i am going to say some loud cuss words!!!!!! Thanks for the info though. It makes me so angry!! I did every thing i could to have a natural birth, ate like a real health nut!!!! Exercied, no drugs, not even a tylenol and to know that that damned shot could have done that!! My next babies will not get it if i can help it!!!!! Jaundice can be caused by many things, so it is not absolutely certain that Vit K is the cause. But it does make you wonder. You can ask for the blades, which are meant for preemie and sick children because they hurt less to administer. They just cost more which is why docs don't use them regularly. anyway, with our pku, we received a notice in the mail a couple weeks later that everything was fine. My midwife told me they only contact you asap if they find a positive to any of the diseases they check for. What they may check for varies from state to state, Mel i tried to refuse them and my MIDWIFE told me that they were mandatory by law and did not mention that i could refuse. There is no *penalty* for not having it done, however mid-wives and doctors might get a slap on the hand or something bc I haven't found a mid-wife that wouldn't do it. Could we get away with taking mom or dad's blood and sending it in??? Vit. K and HepB are not *mandatory* and are not *required* in any state, same as vaccines - just have to sign a waiver. I didn't even have to do that (in PA) my midwife just didn't do it per our request. It is even stated somewhere on the CDC web page, of course I cannot find it now. But, I don't think they can ever say that vaccines are mandated bc that would make them liable for law suits. I don't know about it being mandatory, but that is the one thing I did do. As far as I'm concerned, it is somewhat beneficial. For example, you can still breastfeed even if they test positive for teh PKU, you just have to watch the levels and such. And, they aren't putting anything into the baby, so it didn't bother me so much. Also, as far as the pain, I just stood with my babies and talked and rubbed them. They did just fine. When I told the midwife this she was fine with it, she said " whatever you want to do " . I decided to just have the nurse do it when she comes out to check on us - usually 2-3 days PP. S. I've had to poke babies many times because the the stick had clot so fast. I do agree that it's at least something coming out than going in. You know the PKU babies or any metabolic compromised babies LOOK sick. They visably look sick since they can't hold their food down. It's a tough call.
