But, in the meantime, Calendula lotion really helps the spots to heal. Weleda makes a nice calendula lotion. Or, use whatever kind you find. Guest guest
Eczema certainly can follow vaccines as vaccine damage - don't know if that is your situation. Sometimes it is a fatty acid metabolism difficulty - here is from another list I am on and it sounds reasonable (and especially if the child is vaccinated, making them more at risk to develop it). Possibly: these kids are born with some fatty acid metabolism abnormalities. Specifically the primary problem seems that they lack the enzyme necissary to convert linoleic acid to gamma linoleic acid(GLA). In the body fatty acids are used to make prostaglandins. These, among other things, influence inflammatory response. Some fatty acids form prostaglandins that enhance inflammation while others form those that suppress inflammation. In a healthy balance, they keep each other in check, whereas if you are lacking one, the other is allowed to exert more influence. GLA is one that has anti-inflammatory properties so when you are deficient, there will be a tendency toward hyper- responsiveness & inflammation. You can search PubMed for many recent studies where oral GLA supplementation has been demonstrated to alleviate the symptoms of eczema: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi? Also allergies - dairy etc - or allergies to what you, if you are breastfeeding, are eating. If none of the above work, homeopathic treatment with a quality classical homeopath may be helpful. I had eczema as a baby and grew out of it at some point. Or, as I've learned in homeopathy, it could have disappeared with the use of steroid creams (big problems) and worse things started to appear - I had chronic tonsilitis and finally and tonsils out (not a good idea from my point of view now. From a homeopathic prespective, once you stop a certain set of symptoms, often worse symptoms will appear. Guest guest
Sheri, Thanks for the info I will being checking into it after I send this letter. My baby has NEVER been near a needle and I do breastfeed, but not exclusively. I have never, from day one, made enough breast milk to sustain my baby, so I have always had to supplement and I do so with soy formula. I don't know if this info help you with any more ideas of how to help his eczema. My first attempt is going to be changing our laundry detergent. Thanks for your help. Jill PS I truly appreciate all the info you post here, whether it be OT or not!!!!!!!
Guest guest
My name is Bari and wanted to reply to this excerpt on excema and " lactose from milk not coming through in breastmilk " ... to be clear, if a baby is allergic to cow's milk, it is the cow's milk PROTEIN that the baby is allergic to... and if the baby is " lactose intolerant " then it is the lactose that the baby can't handle well. However, the cow's milk PROTEIN does indeed come through the breastmilk-- and so do ALL the hormones from the cows given RGBH... and it can be very distressing to a baby who is allergic. My son is allergic to dairy and I have given up dairy so that I can continue to breastfeed. Of course, the baby is NOT allegic to your mother's milk... it is the cow's milk. Indeed, the allergy can produce really bad excema (like my son had)... I found the book SUPERIMMUNITIES for KIDS by Leo Galland to be an excellent source of information. I hope this is helpful. Guest guest
It is usually a lack of essential fatty acids or the adrenals aren't producing enough corticosteroids. Try an anti inflammatory herb like yucca. Just make a poultice and place it over the adrenal area or add a little bit of it on your finger and place it in his mouth but just a tiny amount. Adding some flax seed oil would help with the EFA's Kim __________________________________________________________________________ D. Guest guest
Do you pump? Making sure that you stimulate your breast (through pumping or feeding ) every two hours helps your milk supply. Also have you trying taking fenugreek or blessed thistle? At one point, my milk supply started to dwindle. I took fenugreek and pumped more often and it came up. >From: teresav26@... >Reply-Vaccinationsegroups >Vaccinationsegroups >Subject: Re: OT need help w/baby's eczmea >Date: Mon, 9 Oct 2000 08:02:24 EDT > >In a message dated 10/8/00 11:20:43 PM Eastern Daylight Time, >JILBAIT@... >writes: > > > > so I have always had to supplement and I do so with soy formula > >Do you know that 50% of babies who have a dairy allergery also have a soy >allergy?? Guest guest
Hi, everyone thank for the advice. Here are the answers to the questions asked. My baby is six months old but has had the eczema for a long time. As for my milk supply. I have work with a lactation consultant RN who would rather die than give a baby formula and we could not get my supply up. She did put me on Fenugreek and that does work for me. What is blessed thistle? And what form does it come it? i.e. pill, liquid. If my baby is allergenic to the other formulas what else would I give him? Thanks again everyone. I just love this site -- great for a first time Mom!!! Jill , send me if info you have. I would really appreciate it.

Guest guest
Mother's Milk tea (Traditional Medicinals) is made with blessed thistle (as well as fenugreek and fennel). S. Guest guest
I saw Blessed Thistle mentioned a few times here and wanted to note that it is on the contraindicated list for use during pregnancy. I am not sure why. Just wanted to throw that in for anyone who was looking to use it. You might want to check it out first. Also, I found a homeopathic remedy creme for exzema, B & T brand I believe, called Florisone. I would be wary of using it on very young children (the " expert " working that aisle said it was fine) but it worked wonders for my daughter. People were saying she looked like a burn victim, with the skin across her belly and the insides of her arms, cracked, peeling, oozing and bleeding. Each time it would start to heal, she would move and it would split and start over again. In my searches, I found that cortizone and steroid cremes can actually make it worse, clearing up the current rash but as soon as you stop using it, it comes back as a worse case. Basically, it clears up the symptoms but leaves you with the illness. Pretty typical, huh? For us, we discovered that it was most likely a food allergy to eggs and after about a year/year 1/2, she was completely healed and can again eat eggs with no problem. During that time, if she ate anything with eggs in it, she had a flare up. We used tea tree ointment to help with any infection (which I am pretty sure she had, as bad as it looked) and then used the florisone cream. I hated to use it but it was much better than the alternatives and as long as I was dilegent iin applying it for the recomended 3 times a day, it would clear her up almost overnight. Also, using only 100% cotton clothes makes a major difference for both of my older crackle skin kids and double rinsing helps too. I switched from the sensitive skin formula detergents to a brand from the health food store with amazing results. One last thing, I read recently that you should NEVER use lanolin on exzema. I admit, I use it on my son from time to time (the tube kind that nursing women use for cracked nipples). I have never noticed a problem, other that him smelling like a barn afterwards , but you might want to do a search for more info. Good luck! Exzema sucks. Guest guest
Lashannna: My " baby " is 27 months old. BUt I gave up dairy starting when he was only 8 months old. What an amazing difference! He has the most beautiful skin-- and the milk proteins do indeed come through the breastmilk. They are " broken down " but still can cause an allergic reaction. You must give it up for 2 weeks to see if it helps as it takes that long to fully clear your system. Milk is in A LOT of things. It is also known by other names: Whey, Casein, Sodium Caseinate. I " cut out " the milk, but still had products with whey it in (okay, I will admit it they were OREOS...) and (of course) reacted, but as soon as I got rid of the OREOS, was a lot better and I lost LOTS of weight! Cascadian Farms makes a GREAT sorbet and be careful about the EDY's brand of Sorbet because it is made of machines that also do dairy and it can be " contaminated " with dairy. You could email me separately if you want about this, I know it is off the vaccine topic, but the issue of dairy allergies is so near to my heart that if I could give you any information, I hope the others in the group will understand... this DEFINATELY worked for me. GOod luck. IT is kind of hard at first to learn to read labels, but the difference in the excema will make it all worth it. Guest guest
Flaxseed oil is GREAT. I give 1 Tbsp. a day. I call it " special sauce " and he LOVES it. I don't like the taste and take it in capsule form... I think that it will definately help the skin. I don't know how old your baby is and if you are giving solids yet... you could mix the flaxseed oil with cereal,b ut then you wouldn't know how much of it the baby eats if the child doesn't finish the cereal. >From: " Lashanna Small " <lashannasmall@...> >Reply-Vaccinationsegroups >Vaccinationsegroups >Subject: Re: OT need help w/baby's eczmea >Date: Mon, 09 Oct 2000 19:18:52 GMT > > >Can you supply more information on making a poultice? Guest guest
I have used organic CALENDULA cream for some bad excema patches. We were really lucky, I guess, when I gave up dairy and changed our eating habits to more healthy (organic) foods, the excema has really gone away EXCEPT when is teething or haas eaten something that he is allergic to... thought you might like the information on the CAlendula cream-- it worked for us... >From: " Katrina Cloud " <katrinaj@...> >Reply-Vaccinationsegroups >Vaccinationsegroups >Subject: Re: OT need help w/baby's eczmea >Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2000 14:04:43 GMT > >I saw Blessed Thistle mentioned a few times here and wanted to note that it >is on the contraindicated list for use during pregnancy.
