Guest guest
I think there isn't any problem with tanning if you wear a good protection cream, a sunblock [ ] Tanning is an acquired injury to the DNA Hi all! I find this subject of " tanning " very interesting because I recently saw a show about a " Tan Ban. " They mentioned that tanning causes an injury to our DNA and was was absolutely shocked to hear that information since CML is also an " acquired injury to our DNA. " If you go to this site... they talk about it. http://www.skincancer.org/artificial/index.php I was a sun worshipper for years in So. Calif. and spent a huge amount of time at the beach etc, in my younger years, soaking up the sun. I have since moved to a colder climate and do not tan anymore.(kids, busy life, Gleevec puffy body that refuses to wear a swimsuit) I've had CML for 2.5 years, and I cannot go in the sun anymore. 5 minutes in the sun burns my face. I have done such a 180 degree turn regarding tanning. Sincerely, Lynn (Snickersunny)
Guest guest
This is kind of like saying there isn't anything wrong with smoking as long as there's a filter on the cigarette. > > I think there isn't any problem with tanning if you wear a good protection cream, a sunblock > [ ] Tanning is an acquired injury to the DNA > > > Hi all! > > I find this subject of " tanning " very interesting because I recently > saw a show about a " Tan Ban. This is without sun protection. Otherwise a good sunscreen and a hat to protect your face and you should be able to enjoy being outdoors. Vit D is very much in medical and research news these days......my naturopath tested my blood level and has me taking a supplement because Vit D actually functions like a hormone and it important for cell differentiation. OHSU is doing some research on mega-doses of Vit D and cancer. It also plays a role in osteoporosis. But I am not talking about lying in the sun and frying your skin! which I used to love doing in Hawaii......but after being on Gleevec for several years, my last trip there I really fried. C. Guest guest
According to the Cancer Council Australia, College of Dermatologists, Osteoporosis Australia: " A balance is required between avoiding an increase in skin cancer and maintaining adequate vitamin D levels. Sun Protection is required only when UV index is >3, unless at high altitude or near water. Adequate vitamin D can be achieved in summer by the face, arms and hands being exposed to as little as 5 mins of sunlight either side of the peak UV period most days of the week. 2-3 hours in winter per week. Those who are at high risk of skin cancer should consider Vitamin D supplementation " . " When UVI is in the moderate to extreme range, sun protection will not reduce Vitamin D intake. Vitamin D accumulated in summer/autumn can last 30 – 60 days. " I live in Canada and the UV index is almost always over 3 so I can only imagine how high it is in more southern areas. 5 mins of exposure seems reasonable to me but if I stayed out there for 30 mins, especially during peak hours, I'd look like bacon! Guest guest
Hi, The information regarding vitamin D and sun exposure is not that clear-cut. The American Cancer Society still maintains that sun exposure should be avoided. The study about vit. D and sun exposure was not widely embraced by experts, even though it was widely reported in the media, and it has some flaws. The ACS and other experts maintain that the safest way to get vit. D is through vitamins. See this from the Mayo Clinic: ========================== The current information about vitamin D can be confusing. The skin makes vitamin D after exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Yet, many experts say that there is no safe amount of sun exposure because ultraviolet radiation can cause skin cancer. These potentially negative effects are likely cumulative over a person's lifetime. The amount of vitamin D that may help prevent cancer, if any, isn't known. Also, the exact amount of sunlight needed to replenish the body's stores of vitamin D isn't known. Until more is known, it's important to protect your skin from too much sun, according to the American Cancer Society. Getting enough vitamin D also is important. The safest way to increase your vitamin D levels is by taking a multivitamin that contains vitamin D. ============================ ~ G.
