Guest guest
Hello friends, I'm home at last from an exhausting though rewarding winter and spring of travel, and look forward to catching up with the list a bit. I saw in skimming through one digest a couple of days ago that someone (Tracey?) addressed a question to me. I'll try to get to that soon, then work backwards through unread digests as far as I can - though I'm sure I won't get to them all. Those of you who know me and my work may be interested to know that most of my recent travel has been with Doctors Without Borders - most recently to Niger regarding acute malnutrition and a meningitis epidemic, and to South Africa regarding the progress of AIDS treatment there. I've also been, in the past 2 weeks, to St. , USVI, and hiking (again) in the desert of southern Utah! I have to travel a few more times in the Northeast over the next couple of weeks, but that feels like staying home after all the long distance travel; and after that I'll get to remain in Maine until October - hooray! Best to all, R

It's so good to have you back and I look forward to your words of wisdom regarding this news about c-fms that I posted. Your work with DWB is a true inspiration. Hi Doc , It is always special for us when you are present on the list. We have quite a few newbies on the list now, so I am glad they will also get your input about CML. Also, it would be very cool to hear about some of your DWB experiences. Welcome back, love, Maui Nanc
Guest guest
Hi , So glad you're back and safe and full of memories t share when you have the time. President Clinton is going to be on CNN tv tonight and tomorrow talking about ridding South Africa of AIDS so I'll be interested to hear what he says then compare it with your own first-hand knowledge. Your gift of a number of detailed reports from (ASH or ASCO?) before your travels were very helpful to me and, I'm sure others learned a lot, too. I'm in my sixth week of a dasatinib clinical trial and except for some minor breathing problems I'm doing well -- at least my counts are steadily good. First BMB in another 6 weeks. That will tell the real story. So glad you've returned in time to enjoy summer. Guest guest
Hi , Hurrah for you! You are on the mend...and home and that is wonderful. I am sorry you had a dural tear....although I think it is more likely than not that a patient like us will have one. I did too...but luckily enough it didnt cause too bad of a headache....more of a dull throb for a day or so. I can only imagine what its like going throrgh this surgery and watching your own care with a nurses eye. Of course nurses are all different and they are only human....but the ones that did their job well and with compassion made such a difference to me. The one " rotten apple " I had, to this day, is a vivid memory of a miserable me waiting for her shift to end! Getting re-adjusted to this new body and posture does take some time hopefully the aches and pains will settle down soon. Do you have the same walking goals that most of us get on discharge? The first post op day went well and I even managed to eat something. But by day 2, when they tried to sit me up, I was extremely nauseated and had a severe headache. That's when I found out I'd had a dural tear. The next few days were gruelling, fighting nausea, pain and headache. I was disappointed with the nursing care (being a nurse myself, I could see when some of the basics were lacking). > > Anyway, I got through it, got moving, although I have some pretty severe muscle spasms still. Guest guest
Hi Cam I was basically told to increase walking as tolerated. I have a walker but sometimes I feel pretty good without it. So far I have just been walking in the house, but I am itching to get outside. The weather has been just beautiful here. I am a little nervous though about walking on uneven ground. I was told we would discuss physio at the three month check up. It's been two weeks today since the surgery. I can't believe how little pain I'm having. I'm still having some muscle spasms though and they do hurt. I'm also still spending lots of time resting. I'm struggling with constipation and nausea. My appetite isn't great. I know in time this will all pass. In general I think I'm doing pretty well. From: cammaltby <cammaltby@...>Subject: [ ] Re: home at last Received: Thursday, June 3, 2010, 1:19 PM Hi ,Hurrah for you! Guest guest
Thanks Cam. I am finding it hard to judge how much I should push myself at almost 3 weeks out. I must say I am still spending a lot of time lying down. Not much time sitting as it's just not comfortable, but I'm trying to increase that. I walk with the walker for about ten minutes at a time and then I'm pooped! I do this about eight times a day. Does this sound about right? I may have spoken too soon on the pain issue. It seems to have kicked up a notch. I think I am feeling the big screws into the pelvis. Mind you I wasn't able to get any meds down for a couple of days due to nausea, so now I'm playing catch up. From: cammaltby <cammaltby@...>Subject: [ ] Re: home at last Received: Monday, June 7, 2010, 10:12 PM Hi ,Thankfully you will have decent weather without snow and ice to worry you as you venture forth walking. I had to stick with "house walking" followed by "grocery store walking" for a good two months until the footing was safe enough for me outside. Once I could go out alone though I really felt that I could set some distance goals and I did find that I got a good deal stronger faster once I did that. Its that trick of needing to challenge yourself so you can get stronger, without doing too much in the early days. Its wonderful that you are not having too much pain. I well remember the other fun side effects of too many meds and not enough activity. Ugh. Once your routine becomes more normal things are bound to improve. In the mean time, drink lots of water, ask your doctor about a stool softener and I highly recommend the old milk of magnesia mixed with prune juice cocktail as an excellent recipe for starting the day!Take Care, Cam
Guest guest
Thanks Beth. You have my sympathy on the nausea issue. I know I need to eat to get stronger, but when everything turns your stomach, it sure is hard. I think I have an aversion to pills. As soon as I look at them, my stomach starts to heave. I've tried putting them with yogurt or ice cream. Sometimes that helps them go down. I just can't wait to get off the narcotics. I think they are a big part of the nausea. From: beth.baier <beth.baier@...>Subject: [ ] Re: home at last Received: Monday, June 7, 2010, 1:05 PM , I've had nausea from the start at the hospital. Every time I think it's gone, it decides to flare up again - even six+ weeks later. Even when I know I'm hungry I'll sometimes have no appetite for anything. The iron supplement I have at home gives me loose bowel movements, so I'm definitely not constipated. I'm still taking one OTC Prilosec every evening. They forced me to drink Ensure in rehab; the only way I could get it down was by alternating sips of it with sips of plain milk. Crackers or dry toast before a meal sometimes helped. Hang in there.--Beth (L.I.)> > > > > > From: cammaltby <cammaltby@>> > Subject: [ ] Re: home at last> > > > Received: Thursday, June 3, 2010, 1:19 PM> > > > > > Â > > > > > > > > Hi ,> > > > Hurrah for you!
