It takes another newbie to speak the words right out of my mouth ... I wonder

how many more people are going to make the comment about intimidation from this

group ... I am glad in some ways that I don't join in the live chats at present

because I couldn't stand it, the thought of putting some reasonable comment

forward to it thrown right back in my face.

I really hope that some of the 'oldies' to this group will realise what is

happening here and stop the bickering.

[ ] Newbie stuff

OK -have been lurking long enough. I have not felt able to post

before because I don't understand half of what you guys are talking

about. I was diagnosed in November 05, spent some weeks on Hydroxy

Urea and am on day 13 of Gleevec. I live in cape Town, South Africa.

I hope that the little spats I have seen are unusual because I group

ike this is so important. I must say, however, that it is quite

intimidating for a newly diagnosed person to join in. Perhaps we

need somebody to take on the job of inducting newbies?

Anyway...I have a question. I am on day 13 of Gleevec. I keep

hearing about all of you dealing with hectic side effects which are

so bad that you have to stop taking it etc. Other than feeling

really tired I have experienced nothing? Does that it mean it

hasn't kicked in yet? What should I expect and when should I expect

it?

I must admit to havingfelt really sore on Hydroxy urea but the

Gleevec seems not to have had any effect.

Any ideas?

Hi there and WELCOME from Downunder.

I hope you enjoy the message board on and ask Zavie lots of

Questions...we have lots of chats but I guess Zavie will contact you.

Because you are not sufferening much side effects at the moment

dosnt mean to say you will. You might be one of the lucky ones that

breeze through (i hope for yoursake you do) some do go through

treatment with Gleevec without side effects, some like myself end up

with severe side effects that at times we need to stop.

Sounds like your doing ok..and thats great.

Glad you found the group and once again WELCOME.

Dear Recentmahogany,

Gleevec side effects are quite variable. Some people, as you have read,

suffer terribly from them, and others are not bothered much at all. Many people

have trouble in the beginning, i.e., the first few months of Gleevec, and then

their bodies seem to adjust. With time, people also figure out strategies to

minimize the impact of certain side effects, such as taking Gleevec on a full

stomach and drinking lots of water for nausea, taking calcium and magnesium

supplements, ibuprofen or naproxen and taking hot baths for muscle cramps, using

various creams for skin rashes, taking imodium for diarrhea, etc. But as I

said, everyone's reaction is different. And if you're not experiencing many side

effects that is wonderful and does not mean that Gleevec is or is not working.

It just means that you tolerate it well, which is a very good thing. A warm

welcome to the group and please feel free to ask any questions you want; there

are many caring and knowledgeable people on this site.
