You say you can't pump...I'm assuming you mean you can't pump at work. Would it be possible for you to pump once in the Am, once at night and try to have a little pu aside that way? Also, he is 10 months...Perhaps you could give him some solids and juice during the day, and nurse a lot evenings and weekends. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can make that would take the place of breastmilk or any kind of formula. If you are not going to nurse, and you'll be needing to give formula while gone, that's really the only safe way. Homemade formulas should not be used. But, as I said, depending on how long you'll be gone, if he eats any solids and so forth, you may not have to give any..For example, if you'll be gone 8 hours (figure in drive time also) you could nurse in the AM, have the sitter give him some veggies or meat for lunch and a cup of juice (some little snacks in between) and then nurse when you get back to him. Good luck. ha I am unfortunately returning to work in a week and have to wean my 10 month old. I still plan on nursing him morning and night, but I need something that I can give him at the sitters. Guest guest
There are no studies that show that formula is any better than cow's milk. The formula companies would like you to think that there is though. If any one knows of any studies I'd love to read them. Not that cow's milk is necessarily a good thing! I just meant that formula isn't any better. Perhaps he could drink water from a tippy while you are gone. kimme

But really, formula is the only suitable alternative to breastmilk. I'm FAR from a formula fan. Never had an ounce of it in the house, and I sent back the free samples they sent to my house. I Absolutely DO not get any info from them. Formula is far from perfect but there are a lot of addednutrients and such that you won't find in cows milk that is a little closer to what the baby should be getting. Also, remember, babies under 1 should not be given cow's milk. It is much to hard to digest on top of many other things.
Guest guest
Here is the ingredient list from a package of Baby's Own Organic Formula, sold through our health food store. This is supposed to be one of the healthiest alternative. Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Nonfat Dry Milk, Organic High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Organic Soybean Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Natural Milk Mineral Concentrate, Calcium Ascorbate (Vit. C), Soy Lecithin, Calcium Citrate, Natural Flavor, Choline Bitartrate, Ferrous Sulfate, Inositol, Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate (Vit.E), Zinc Sulfate, Niacinamide, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Thiamin Hydrochloride (Vit. B1), Copper Sulfate, Riboflavin (Vit. B2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vit. B6), Vitamin D3, Folic Acid, Manganese Sulfate, Phytonadione (Vit. K), Potassium Iodide, Biotin, Cyanocobalamin (Vit. B12). I don't use this (or any other) formula, but I happen to have this sample that I got through our store. I am sorry for you and your baby to have to have this break. I am curious as to your reasons for not being able to pump. Often, I have found, that there was helpful information out there that I just didn't know about. 10 months old is so young and there are so many benifits to longer nursing that you both would be missing out on. I am very happy to know that you still plan to continue during your together hours. I am sure that there are a number of people on this board who have a great deal of knowledge in this area who could help you through this if you would be willing to try pumping. If you want to email me privately, I can send you a list of wonderfully informative sites that I have found. Good luck, Katrina >From: " L. Guest guest
When we weaned our little girl, we used 2/3 Goat's Milk and 1/3 Rick Milk. She adjusted to it quite well and we felt good, based on our research, about giving it to her. " L." wrote: I am unfortunately returning to work in a week and have to wean my 10 month old. Guest guest
I don't know anything about this product, but if you *had* to use a formula there is one available that is supposed to be organic. It's called Baby's Own Organic, hold on I'll see if they have a web site ... http://www.babyorganic.com/productinfo.html HTH! Guest guest
- call Jack Newman! His # at Sick Kids is (416) 813-5252. He also has an e-mail address: newman@.... He was very helpful to me when my daughter was starting to eat more solids and less breastmilk, also around 10 months. He told me that Rice Milk was fine to give her; she could gets fats, protein, etc from other dietary sources. He is very prompt with his replies and is always happy to help anyone he can - even those whose babies aren't newborns anymore. For anyone else with breastfeeding questions, feel free to e-mail Jack anytime. He is the local breastfeeding guru in our city (yes, he is a man), and I refer woman to him for breastfeeding problems at least once a week. There's practically no problem he can't solve! He has definitely makes the difference between women continuing to breastfeed and quitting b/c they are so frustrated with whatever they are going through! Good luck . Guest guest
Dear , I know you've had lots of responses but I wanted to share my experience. I am raising my Grandson, his mother abandoned him at 3 months of age. He had been sickly from birth, she had him on similac formula. As I posted previously I started readying the label, did the math and realized this stuff was horrible for him. Cow's milk is a unacceptable alternative, as cows are large boned animals and an infant is unable to break down the fats and proteins for absorption. After much research, I found a really old book on substitute formula's and was very happy with the results. Even the Dr. couldn't believe how healthy and alert my Grandson was after only two weeks on the new formula. Every morning in a blender I would mix. Fresh goats milk about 10 oz. Enriched rice milk about 6 oz. (give or take on these, I never measured exactly) 1 dropper of Trace Minerals 1 t. liquid Cal/Mag 1 T. Flax seed oil 1 T. Black strap molasses 1/8 t. Brewers Yeast (at least once a week) 1 t. liquid vitamin C (can add more if child is sick) 1 T. liquid acidophilus More vitamins can be added if needed. Goats milk is the closest thing to mother's own breast milk - it was explained to me that their bone structure is closer to our own therefore the solids are easily broken down. The above formula should fill about 5 or 6 Playtex nursers, refrigerate immediately. Make only enough for one day at a time as the flax seed oil will separate. Watch the Childs stools closely, you will need to adjust the flax seed oil, to avoid constipation or diarrhea. I could not believe the difference proper nutrition makes in any child. Of course Breast milk is always best. Annette M. Hall Vote NO on Prop 38 http://www.homeschoolchristian.com/Position/Duffy/Vouchers.html subscribe/CA-Prop38 -----Original Message-----From: L. Guest guest
My midwife suggested a similar recipe for formula using goats milk. I did some research and came to the same conclusion that you did. Taycee has been formula fed since she was 5 days old. We use the Walmart brand which I have to mention is *significantly* less expensive than the organic brand available. Taycee is the picture of health: http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/t/taycee/ at 5 months old. She has never been sick and is already scooting all over the house. I feel like I should be doing ads for formula companies! Every child is different I guess but formula is working well for us. Guest guest
After reading the labels on ALL the formula containers I could find in the grocery store, I would never feed that crap to my kids under any circumstance. Guest guest
Hi , I strongly encourage you to nurse as often as you can. I'll admit that sleeping with my baby didn't work for us but is it possible that you could make up a few feedings that way? Just a suggestion, not a judgement. that said, I have heard of an organic formula, called Baby's Own Organic toddler formula. It is recommended as a supplement for babes already on solids. The company's name is NATURE'S ONE and their web site is: http://www.naturesone.com. This is not an endorsement, we have never tried it. I know they sell it at the Whole Foods markets (hfs) in our area and I think ecobaby also sells it (is that true? I might be remembering it wrong-lol) Good Luck, bonnie --------------------------------------- I am unfortunately returning to work in a week and have to wean my 10 month old. Guest guest
, You said you will not be able to pump. Is that due to not being able to at work or because you do not own a pump? I went to work alone when my daughter was 9 mo. Until then I was able to take her to work. I found that I could not pump at work. I would pump in the morning as soon as I woke up and then I would pump as soon as I got home. Then I would nurse her. It worked for me. If no pump is the problem, you might find a used (nice like Medela) pump somewhere and just buy the replacement horns and tubes. Good luck!! Mommy to Payton (1/6/98) and Landon (4/2/00) 99.9% of households have TV's, only 97% of the households have indoor plumbing. All this crap coming in and not enough going out.
