I am very concerned about giving such a small baby Albuterol Although I don't know what the albuterol insert says about infant age, my second son was also on this drug for a few days when he was 4 months old. The thing that would worry me the most about your situation now is that it could cover up something worse. In our case we had the antibiotic (before we knew better) and the albuterol, he took it for 3 days and didn't get better, he got worse. His breathing got labored and we rushed him to the children's hospital. He ended up having RSV, a horrible resp. virus (I believe virus), anyway what did they do at the hospital? surprisingly they didn't give more drugs, they got a really long suction and put it up his nose, as horrible as it was to watch he left the hospital with his blood oxygen back up to normal and with no more drugs. Anyway... just keep an eye on your little one. The saline alone didn't break up the mucus. Good luck and I am sure there are some homeopathic remedies that the folks on this list can give you. Guest guest
For the ear infection (which my sisters son sometimes got when he was very small) our doctor prescribed olive oil and garlic ear drops (garlic has natural antibacterial properties), and also DMSO drops. I don't know about the bronchitis, but I would definately try to find an alternative to the albuterol. I read some not so reasurring articles on it, although I don't remember where. Also, if you are giving the amoxicillin, or any antibiotics, give him acidopholus or polydophilus 2 to 3 times a day to restore the good bacteria in his intestines. You can buy them in a health food store. Just crush the tablets, mix with water, and dose him with a spoon or dropper...Sharon OT-Sick 16 week old baby I know this is way off topic for this list but I am looking for non-traditional suggestions for my sick son. He was diagnosed with an ear infection and bronchitis today at the doctors office. I can't believe this. My daughter has a head cold, gave it to me and he got it and literally overnight it turned into all of this. Anyway, he was given Amoxicllin and Albuterol. I am very concerned about giving such a small baby Albuterol. He gets so wired off of this and rest is so vital to get well. Are there any suggestions? I brought him in with nasal congestion interfering with him eating and left with these diagnoses. I am using saline drops and an aspirator to suction his nose. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Lynne B. 8/30/96 & 9/10/

It says on page 520 that " Safety and effectiveness in children below the age of 12 have not been established. " It also says that if you are nursing and taking this product you should stop nursing - which says to me an infant shouldn't have it. Some of the side effects of this drug are: cough, labored breathing, wheezing and worsening bronchospasms - all the stuff it's supposed to prevent. When my son got bronchitis when he was little I would start myself on zinc lozenges and vitamin C (makes breastmilk hi-test), and I took myself and him off of any and all forms of sugar, dairy and wheat. There is also children's liquid C out there - which will thin the secretions. Also, there is a children's herbal expectorant by Naturade that works wonders with my son - also thins secretions. If you are nursing, you can also boost your milk's quality by juicing veggies like carrots which contain high amounts of beta carotene which are excellent bronchial aids for healing. Your doctor definitely overprescribed for your infant in my opinion. I would get another one.
Guest guest
Hello Lynne, I'm sorry to hear about your sick little babe. We've used breast milk drops on our 2 month old with great success (in the nostril, just as you would saline drops) only possible if you're nursing, though. I always take echinacea or garlic or ginger rather than a prescription antibiotic, as they are more effective for me. Here is a recipe for " tea for ear infection " - YOU can drink, if nursing, or give a few drops to baby with an eye dropper: 1oz rose hips, 1oz elder flowers, 1oz licorice root, 1oz peppermint leaves. Crush all herbs and pour near-boiling water over them, steep about 10 minutes, or until cool enough to drink. Consume as much as you want; the rose hips are astringent, anti-inflammatory, and high in Vit.C, the elder flowers are slightly sedative and reduce fevers, the licorice is anti-inflammatory, tastes good and is antiviral and antibacterial, the peppermint reduces fevers, decongests, and is calming. Good luck! Namaste, Gretchen On Sun, 31 Dec 2000 20:23:28 EST Linster716@... writes: > I know this is way off topic for this list but I am looking for > non-traditional suggestions for my sick son. Guest guest
The safety and effectiveness of albuterol has not been tested in children under the age of 12...I'm not sure why they readily prescribe this for young babies. I've had bronchitis twice and I've taken a wild cherry-slippery elm bark formula from the health food store, which cleared it up pretty quickly. I'm not sure about the safety/dosage for such a little baby though.
Guest guest
I am very sorry to hear about your sick baby. Are you nursing? If so and you had the cold yourself you should have the cure right in your milk. If not things are a little more complicated. There are homeopathic combinations on the market that get good results. Not everybody is learned enough to select just one homeopathic remedy to fit the symptoms so sometimes we have to give a combination of remedies. Hyland has some on the market. One is for the sinuses, others are for cough. I like almost all of them. There are also homeopathic remedies for ear ache. Before I would give anything allopathic to a child of that age I would give these a chance. Good luck, a. Guest guest
lynne, this is what i would do--for what it's worth...i would start with trying to get my immune system bulked up (if you are still breastfeeding) with echinacea and zinc tablets. then i would also try to get him to take either a chewable echinacea or a squirt of liquid. then i would as frequently as possible "steam" the heck out of him. we went through this just this past week with our 14 month old. i got all worried and was reading up in all my books, etc. but then i finally decided to just go back to an old favorite--steaming. it is working wonderfully!! his nose is running freely now and i just keep wiping it and re-steaming him. all his congestion is now breaking up and although he is coughing, at least it is breaking up and coming up out of him, instead of staying in his chest. that's where i would get concerned. i doubt i would ever use Albuterol, especially ! with such a young child. and i really would try to steer clear of the amoxicillin too... good luck--hope he's feeling better... brigit
Guest guest
Taken form Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child. Bronchitis Dietary Guidelines: Eliminate mucus forming foods such as dairy products, sweets, and fried foods. Nutritional supplements: Beta-carotene helps to heal mucus membranes. Give your child one dose, one does one to two times a day. Vitamin C and bioflavonoids have anti-inflammatory properties. Give your child one dose of each, three times a day. Zinc helps to boost the immune system and speed recovery. It is easily taken in lozenge form, on e a day. I pretty much typed this verbatim. Since this is a baby, if your are breastfeeding, you will have to take the supplements yourself and let it come through your breast milk. Ear infection Dietary: Keep well hydrated. Lot’s of breast milk. Again, no dairy. Supplements: Lactobacillus acidophilus or bifidus will replace friendly bacteria in the Intestine that may be destroyed by taking antibiotics. The bacteria help to fight off disease. Vitamin C and bioflavonoids. Zinc. >From: Linster716@... >Reply-Vaccinationsegroups >Vaccinationsegroups >Subject: OT-Sick 16 week old baby >Date: Sun, 31 Dec 2000 20:23:28 EST > >I know this is way off topic for this list but I am looking for >non-traditional suggestions for my sick son. Guest guest
Get some Gaia's Children Warming Vaporous Rub This chest and back rub similar to Vick's Vapor Rub, only a 100 times better, works wonders when my kids have colds or chest infections. I get it at my local health food store. It contains essential oils of Lavender, Pine, Thyme, Peppermint and Yarrow. From the Parent's guide I got to go along with my Gaia's Children herbs: Essential oils of plants have several common therapeutic actions, as well as specific action particular to the individual plant. This aromatic topical rub acts to warm the superficial skin and muscles while quickly penetratating the skin to relax and warm the lungs and deep tissues. The sessentials oils act to stimulate blood flow to the chest and lungs. Many have anti-microbial activity, acting to diminish the infective agent in colds and flus, particularly when taken into the respiratory system through inhalation. Yarrow essential oil acts as an anti-inflammatory, anti microbial, and a acirculatory stimulant. Lavendar, thyme, and pepperimint all belong to the same plant family and all act to relax and open the airways, release muscular tension, and stimulate blood flow. Lavender and thyme also have strong anti-microbial activity. When my sister in-law was at my house for Christmas dinner her 6 month old had been sick with a cold for over a week. The baby was miserable because she couldn't nurse because her nose was so stuffed and she couldn't sleep for any length of time for the same reason and also being hungry from not being able to nurse. I rubbed the warming vaporus rub all over her back, neck and chest and gave her a dose of the Gaia's Children Wet Cough and Elder/Eyebright formula's. She nursed as best she could then precede to sleep the day away! My sister-in-law kept checking on her to make sure she was alright which probally is what woke her up about four hours later. We repeated what I had done earlier before she left to go home and the next day she called to tell me the baby had slept the whole two hour trip home. My sister-in-law was at the health food store the next day. I hope this info helps. Maughan Work At Home on-line!
