Sheri ***** To and our family it was a disaster, as an observer of the real world and the prevalence of autism, an even larger disaster. This past Friday, our son , in one of those moments that all parents with a child with autism can relate to ( you know, your child is out-of-sight for just that brief moment ) went upstairs in our house and climbed inside the electric dumbwaiter ( a cargo elevator that moves between the first and second floors of our house) to pretend he was acting out a scene from Toy Story 2, got himself trapped inside the dumbwaiter, with his left arm caught between the top frame of the car and the inside wall. When I ran upstairs in response to his screams, I found that 's left arm was broken, and after a few minutes of work, I was able to free him. Janna called 911, my son helped consol while we waited for the ambulance to arrive. A few minutes later the ambulance and fire trucks arrived. As we worked with the paramedics, I noticed that one paramedic was watching with more interest then the others, and asking questions about 's behaviors and mannerisms. On the way to the hospital, in the back of the ambulance, the paramedic who continued to stare at with a deepening sadness in his eyes, told me that his five year old son who behaves and looks just like . I asked him if his son had a diagnosis. He told me that he and his wife had taken his son to a couple of different doctors and diagnosticians who were unwilling to make a diagnosis, told over and over again " Dont worry, he'll grow out of it " . It was clear to me by the description of his son, that his son was autistic, or fell somewhere within the autism spectrum disorder spectrum. I was devastated for this young father, and the horror of once again meeting someone, quite by chance, who had a child with autism, a condition that many so-called autism experts and public health officials continue to insist is not more prevalent than it used to be. Upon arriving at the hospital, and after hours of waiting, we were finally seen by an orthopedic surgeon. We told him that suffers with autism. He looked at and said " I know how to deal with him, I have a daughter with autism " . Two out of two locations. What are the chances of that? Well, from similar experiences told by hundreds of other parents and care providers, not such an uncommon finding at all. The question remains, are we as a society going to wake up to the fact that there are more and more of these kids everywhere we look, or continue to act like ostriches with our heads in the sand, not believing what is happening around us. rick ****** From: rrollens@... >Date: Sun, 19 Nov 2000 17:27:20 EST >Subject: Re: [i-v-y] Breaks His Arm, Discovers Autism Along The Way... > >thanks for your concern. things are stabilizing for and the rest of >us. you may send the post to anyone and everyone you want. rick *********** -------------------------------------------------------- Sheri Nakken, R.N., MA Vaccination Information & Choice Network, Nevada City CA 530-272-7306 http://www.nccn.net/~wwithin/vaccine.htm " All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men ( & women) do nothing " ...Edmund Burke ANY INFO OBTAINED HERE NOT TO BE CONSTRUED AS MEDICAL OR LEGAL ADVICE.
