Dr.Manorama,

This " Dr.Majid " has tremendous clout. When he first started advertising in

papers, we brought to the notice of the Mumbai English papers that there was no

'cure' for HIV/AIDS. We approached the Advertising Council and informed them of

this racketeering. And we also informed them to refer the case to the ICMR.

Not even a single letter sent to the editors/advertising council has been

acknowledged. We discovered he is paying premium for the advertisiements he is

giving. The exploitation is quite bad.

There are people who have sold all their wives' jewellry and the average costs

turns out to be Rs. 65,000. I think we should take this fellow to court and

properly

prosecute him though I'm afraid the case will drag on for years given the state

of our judicial system.

But what is more alarming is the sudden growth of other bogus pharmaceutical

companies. There are now some companies in the hinterland of Maharashtra,

especially the regions of Marathwada and Vidharbha, with fascinating names like

'Love Pharmaceuticals' which have been going the Majid way. They charge Rs.

10,000 for a course of two months and we discovered steroids in their capsules.

There are some Mumbai based PLWA organisations which are keeping a close watch

over these companies, the chief among them being 'Swayam Siddha' which

has a huge membership of working class Marathi men and women. Their leadershiop

is very aware of this racketeering.

So is Ashok Pillai of INP Plus. The question is when do we move and how fast

will

be the case go through the courts. Who has the money to pay these top lawyers?

If we have to move we need to plan out a strategy. Maybe APAC will come in.

Anyway, the Humsafar Trust would like to be with you in this battle. I hear

Majid has pots of money. He has paid tax on something like Rs. six crores in

1998/99. So there is plenty of money to bribe and keep corrupt offcials happy.
