Guest guest
Hi Richie, To my knowledge, marked blood pressure elevations are not known to be caused by untreated CML, nor a side effect of Gleevec. While it does appear that Gleevec may lower cardiac risk over time by lowering cholesterol and LDL and by raising HDL, I wouldn't count on this in the short term; you should get your hypertension worked up and treated independently. As others have pointed out, certain types of eye bleeds are an not uncommon side effect of Gleevec, but what you describe is not the typical side effect. I'd agree that it's more likely from some other cause especially since you had an eye bleed with your hypertensive crisis (that's what we call a BP elevation of that magnitude in the med biz) prior to diagnosis of CML. If I were you I'd see both an opthalmologist and a blood pressure specialist. Don't leave this in the hands of your hematologist only.
