Guest guest
Dr. Terry Hamblin has an excellent entry on his blog from Saturday (mutated-unmuated.blogspot.com) regarding flu and pneumonia shots for CLL patients. Pat PS It is unmuated - this is not a typo. If you can't get to the site with this information Google Mutations of Mortality.
Guest guest
Hi Amy, I have been told no flu vaccines by two CFIDS docs (once over ten years ago and again about 2 years ago) I have even been told no tetanus booster. I especially wouldn't do a live vaccine. I have never gotten the flu since I've had ME/CFIDS and I think it is because that arm of my immune system is overactive (while the other arm is underactive). TH1 vs. TH2. So, I think getting a preemptive vaccine doesn't make sense. > > > > what do people think of flu vaccines for people with cfids? > > I think they are expecting something similar to hong kong flu > > http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/index.htm > > wiki: flu vaccine > > > there is also a live nasal spray, > > and a stronger vaccine for people over 65. > > > would we want any of these??? > > As the nasal vaccine is live, do we need to keep away from others who get it , especially that day, or how long? Guest guest
I used to get the flu shot every year, and every year without fail I ended up with the flu. I spent 3-4 months sick EVERY winter. I'd also get strep throat which would develop into bronchitis, so I was always on anti-biotics, which is a vicious cycle. My doctors have advised me against it, since being disabled with CFS, etc. I quit taking the flu shot over ten years ago, and have only had the flu once in that time. To me, it makes sense. As far as I understand it, the flu shot contains various strains of the flu so our bodies can build the anti-bodies. A healthy body, anyway. For someone who's immune system is exhausted or on overdrive, we can react badly to small doses of chemicals/environmental allergens (paint, perfume, etc) that healthy people have no problem with. I'm pretty sure that doctors here don't advise the flu shot for people with HIV, etc. If you've had it before without reacting badly to it then you could probably continue, but I'm never doing it again. My two cents anyway, hope it helps. Peace, Jen. EDIT: The reason I quit was that the ambulance drivers went on strike here when they were ordered to have the shot (and refused). They said they couldn't afford to be sick/contagious when treating patients. At the time, formaldehyde was one of the things they put in the shots.
