Chonette,

I agree, my cataracts could be from the aging process, not stereoids; but the osteoporosis is another story.

As a male with normal endocrine system, consuming a healthy and varied diet and following an intensive exercise schedule until the onset of my Polymyalgia 1 1/2 years ago, I can find no reason other than stereoid side effects for developing osteoporosis.

comp[uter -steroids

Andy and ,

Thanks for the tip, I will look into the outlook express, I have checked with the research list and there it also happens but if you reply key works then it must be my settings. I have not got the time to look into it today so I will leave it for after Christmas and if I can't sort it out myself I will ask my son. We got all sort of things installed on the computer as my son used it as his office when he come home from Germany (on line conferences etc.)

Steroids

My friend that had a kidney transplant 12 years ago is on 5 mg. of steroids a day for ever that is to prevent rejection.

Terry Hamblin is not keen on long term usage of Prednisolone, he prefers pulses, while I was on treatment with low doses chlorambucil and Rituximab I had 4 days of Dexametasome (10 mg.) each month, he thought that was best than using Prednisolone that had given me other side effects that had a long term damage, now that my platelets are low and we need them up for the cataract surgery I am repeating it again under his instructions, maybe starting tomorrow for 4 days and again next month, I spoke to my GP yesterday over the phone and we both decided that I will have a blood test every 2 weeks now to check the platelets rather than continue to do it once a month, at least until the date for the eye surgery comes.

One of the things that has made me very relaxed over the last few months is that I no longer have to go to the hospital for check ups, my GP surgery takes care of me and we send the info to Dr. Hamblin who instruct us what to do if any thing needs doing. For the first time since dx I feel I am part of the team and I am not told what to do but talk over things, it is a far more civilised way of handling this CLL.

Andy, I think 6 mg. a day is a very low doses so just like my friend has had it for 12 years and he is ok, you will also tolerate it, I might ask him which steroids he takes and pass it on. (I had 50 mg. a day for 8 weeks twice plus tailing down time, I only weight 50 kg.)

Do you know for sure that your cataracts are steroids related or are they the ones that come with age which are more common?

I was not aware of being any different until the consultation, when both doctors seemed so exited and talking about the differences from one type and the other, I am afraid the names were all new to me so I can not remember the differences they were pointing out, I should have recorded the session. However when I go for the surgery, I will ask some names and write them down so I can know more about it.

I will be off computers for a few days, I am off to Devon for Christmas tomorrow.

Happy Christmas and a good and happy new Year.

regards

Re: swollen glands- steroid related cataract - Chonette Posted by: " Gach" unclewolfolypen Date: Thu Dec 21, 2006 6:42 am ((PST))Chonette,The reply key is working for me.Regarding stereoid side effects: I've been taking low-dose Prednisone for Polymyalgia for a year-and-a-half-now. I, too have cataracts in addition to osteoporosis which is rare in men and is almost certainly the side effect of Prednisone. I'm on Actonel now to (hopefully) improve my bone mineral density.I tried to quit Prednisone, but the stiffness and aches from Polymyalgia got the better of me. My hips were so stiff that I could barely walk. Right now, I take 6 mg. a day and will try again to taper it lower eventually. As to CLL, I'm still asymptomatic, a year after dx. Being unmutated and Zap-70 borderline positive, I don't know how long that will last.Andy
