Guest guest
Shram Shakti Project (SSP) - News The project is intervening among sex workers, industrial workers and their wives in Asansol subdivision of West Bengal, India for prevention and control of STD/HIV. It is a CARE-India initiative. Two important events happened in January 2001. a.. A team of 28 people from Tamil Nadu visited us to observe SSP activities. They were partners of the AIDS Prevention and Control (APAC) project operating in the state with funds from USAID. This was a learning exercise to help them in initiating STD/HIV prevention and control activities amongst industrial workers in Tamil Nadu. While touring the project, they kept on asking what is the magic behind establishing such good rapport with the industries. As a continuation to the learning exercise, a program associate of APAC is scheduled to visit the project for 4 days in February. b.. The project has been intervening in one area of Eastern Coalfield Limited since April 1999. It had to put off its expansion plans into other areas in second year owing to funds crunch. But now, management of other areas wants to replicate the activities on their own. The area medical officer of one such area came down to SSP office with a request. On 22nd January, a workshop was conducted with around thirty people (doctors, paramedics and supervisors). The company bore the entire expenses. SSP only acted as the resource. The general manger of the area was also present. He directed his medical officer to initiate long term activities with guidance from CARE, money would not be a constraint.
