Guest guest
Hello Chonette- Low platelets are really scary when they drop to 1000 like mine did. I had 3 episodes (out of the blue) of low platelets since Jan. this year. I developed petechiae on my legs and arms plus the big purple spots inside my cheeks. I was told not to drive and not to walk barefoot. Lise (via Fred) gave good advice about Tylenol, and the food. I read from Chinese herbal medicine that it is good to eat the red coverings of Spanish peanuts for your platelets.(The papery coverings not the shell!!) These are also high in resveratrol so I eat them every day. There is a web site called ITP people and they have a forum about treatments and outcomes. There is also the NIH in Bethesda, land that is doing a study on ITP. I think the doctor there is Dougherty. Treatments suggested for me were steroids, IVIG, Cytoxin, Rituxan, Vitamin C, Winrho, RICE then allo transplant, and fludarabine. My doc seemed to think the fludara I had 3 years ago may have caused this ITP. She also thought maybe a virus was responsible causing my antibodies to attack my platelets. I had 4 recent treatments of Rituxan (2 low dose and 2 high dose) and my platelets have risen steadily to 204,000 last week. I'm still on 30 mg of prednisone every day trying to wean off it. Hope you find a treatment that works for you-Carol in Detroit SLL/CLL dx. 98, CHOP x6, FRC x4, steroids, IVIGx9, Rituxan x4, still on prednisone (yughhh) Kurt- How's your dad doing? Hope he's OK with platelets.
