Guest guest
Hello Group! There has been a lot talk about switching from Neurontin to Topamax. My doctor is trying this with me. I am now down to 900mg of Neurontin a day (from 3600mg a day) and up to 300mg of Topamax a day. I am also on Amitriptyline that was just increased to 100mg at night. I found out that these two medications have an interaction with each other. Does anyone know of this and have any reaction to it? Since these changes to my medications, I have been having a lot of problems with my mouth. I have swollen/bruised gums, canker sores and blisters. My teeth are also very sore to the point that I am having a lot of pain when I eat. I have asked my doctor (the one who did the SCS and prescribed the Topamax) about this and he does not feel the Amitriptyline has anything to do with it. I am confused and frustrated. Can anyone shed any light on the effects of Topamax, Amitriptyline etc. Thanks.
Guest guest
Hi, Sorry you are having so much trouble with your meds. Unfortunately, since we all take so much ... we tend to have many problems, reactions, allergic reactions, side effects, and bad interactions between meds. I Was on Neorintin, but with 2 weeks, I was so confused, I couldn't figure out how to get in my car, why I walked into a room, and so on. They thankfully weaned me off. But, I have been taking Amityrptline for a long long time. It was given to me about 6 years ago from my neuro-surgeon after they did a triple discectomy in my cervical spine. I had very bad muscle spasms in my neck, they had put a titanium plate and 8 screws in there and I just had allot of problems. Anyway, now, since the last two years of horror, RSD and implants and so on, my Pain med specialist Dr. that did the implant of my SCS, they increased the amitryptoline. We all know that it causes unbelievably sever dry mouth, canker sores and... My primary care DR says the same thing, even my Podiatrist, who did allot of the surgery to repair my foot know that. So talk to your Dr. again. It causes all kinds of mouth problems. There are toothpastes, mouthwashes, gums and other things that help a little, that are specifically for this particular problem. Talk to you pharmacist, they can also help! Hope you feel better soon, Amy
Guest guest
Hi all, I have a question about teeth. Has anyone had problems with rotting teeth from all the years of narcs and the other meds that are taken with them? I guess Im asking because over the last two years my " meth mouth " has gotten so much worse. Within the last year alone two of my visable teeth have broken off while chewing on ice(thanks to my super dry mouth) and once while brushing my teeth. In my case the odds arent my-werent my only problem. Having braces for 5 years then not having the cement taken completely off(never having a single cavity before then.), and then there is my super fear of the dentist(yes, I know its silly). I dont know, Im really upset by the whole thing. I wish my first doc would have told me all of the possible cruddy(is that a word?) things that could have and would happen, I should have been better at research, maybe asking more questions would have been beneficial. I could go on with the shouldas/wouldas all day, but it wont help me now. Anyway Thanks For Reading This Far. JC:) [awren@...] wrote: Hi, Sorry you are having so much trouble with your meds. Guest guest
Hi , A lot of our meds can cause dry mouth, but elavil(amatriptaline) is or can be awful. I took it for many years too. I had to use a dry mouth gel that I got from CVS all day and at night too. I also got dry eyes from it. I had a lot of tooth problems, cavities and sensitive teeth from the elavil too. The dentist suggested I get something for the dry mouth and to use flouride rinse too. There are a lot of products like Amy said. Just look in the drug store for them. I didn't think the sprays worked as well as the gels tho. Take care, Ruth -- In Stimulator , " " <purplebutterfly1@...> wrote: > > Amy, > > Amitriptyline can cause all kinds of mouth problems??? Guest guest
Hey , Sorry you are having so much trouble. I hope I can help in some way. Amytiptoline is a MAJOR cause of mouth problems. You'll notice that about 30 minutes after you take it that your tongue starts to get dry and thick. Then it spreads thru your whole mouth and lips. It can cause sores, cracked lips, fever blisters, etc. Every one of my doctors have always warned me about that. Crest just came out with a wash, I think it is called Oasis, But there are lots of different product that are primarily for this problem. Call your pharmacist, they will know what I am talking about. Hope this helps. Let me know how you are doing. Amy
Guest guest
Ruth, Thanks for the information. My mother suggested a using a fluoride rinse which also helps with sensitive teeth. I wasn't sure what the problem was at this time. So I have been using the rinse and sensadyne toothpaste. I haven't noticed any dry mouth from Amitriptyline. I took my last pill of the Topamax tonight. So hopefully things will improve. I have noticed that the three nights only taking one at bed time my mouth as felt better. I think I will still check at the pharmacy or other things to help the soreness to heal faster. As far as my cholesterol and Triglycerides, I went to my doctor today to discuss my blood results. I am going to see a nutritionist to see if there is anything that I can change with my diet prior to medication. I have to redo my blood test in 3-6 months. She said that I was not at risk of anything at this time. So, we will see what happens. The other thing, she gave me a prescription for medication to quit smoking. I need to do research on it before I get it filled. Where to do you go on the internet to get your information? How is your abdominal pain doing? Have they found out what is causing it? How is Pat feeling? Did he/you get his insurance straightened out? Well I hope things are improving for your & Pat. One day at a time! Make it a great day! _____ From: Stimulator [mailto:Stimulator ] On Behalf Of Ruth Sent: Monday, September 25, 2006 1:22 PM Stimulator Subject: Re: drug interactions with Topamax Hi , A lot of our meds can cause dry mouth, but elavil(amatriptaline) is or can be awful. Guest guest
I take topamax and Amitriptyline together and I don't have any problems, that's not to say other people don't have problems taking them together. I don't know if my idea as to why you are having problems with your mouth has any merit to it, but I figured I would put it out there. Amitriptyline is none to cause a dry mouth. Then you have Neurontin and Topamax which are both anti-seizure drugs. Anti-seizure drugs are known to cause horrible teeth problems. They can cause dry mouthes, rotting of the teeth, cavities, etc. It is very important when you are on these to go to the dentist regularly and to floss and brush you teeth constantly. I was also told to use a mouth wash with floride to help prevent dekay. My dentist also recommended I try the over the counter mouth washes to help with the dry mouth but none of the seemed to do much. Maybe since you are still on a high dose of neurontin, on a pretty decent dose of topamax, and on the amitriptyline all at the same time all of them together are causing the problem. If you are having a problem with dry mouth my ear, nose and throat doctor just recommended this new medicine to me called Evoxac. I take 30mg 3 times a day and it works great. My mouth hasn't been dry in weeks its wonderful. Anyway, good luck I hope it all works out for you. Guest guest
Thank you Jaci! I appreciate any information people can offer. My surgeon ended up taking me off of the Topamax. I going to stay on a lower dosage of Neurontin until I see him again in October to try another medication. It's so difficult to try new meds with everything we are on! Thank you also, to everyone else that responded to my posting!! _____ From: Stimulator [mailto:Stimulator ] On Behalf Of Jaclyn Drake Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 1:35 AM Stimulator Subject: Re: drug interactions with Topamax I take topamax and Amitriptyline together and I don't have any problems, that's not to say other people don't have problems taking them together.
