Where do you get Kirkman's and how much does she weigh. For example, my son weighs about 63lbs. So how much would he take. It would help if somone would just tell me about what he would take. I am not that great at figuring it out based on weight. Thanks, LoriCarol in IL <ps1272000@...> wrote: Gingko came up on downsyn last week and I

Carol,

She is doing fantastic! Sam just doesn't seem to like numbers much, they certainly are not consistant. How did you work on numbers with ? Also how did you work on writing? We are still using magnetic letters for spelling.

well, carol, isn't it obvious? If you need to compare, then why not compare it with last few months? I had to stop ginkgo two weeks prior Casey's tonsillectomy surgery, and two weeks after the surgery. Gosh, it was painful to see him standing confused, and cried. When I started to give him ginkgo, he was a lot more HAPPY, and he was back to his best self at last. He talked better, I cannot explain...but I can see the difference...BIG difference. It is the ginkgo, Carol. okay? kkCarol in IL <ps1272000@...> wrote: Gingko came up on downsyn last week and I realized I hadn't posted an update about it here in a while. Below is what the site that started all this recommends. I started with just 75, then upped her dose. I don't think anyone can tell you a dose. Start with these doses and see if it helps.

I buy Kirkman's here : http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/products/specialty/gingko/H_Ginko_Biloba_C_100_Spec031.html

The reason I use their brand is lack of fillers for 's special diet.

http://www.curingdownsyndrome.com/index_files/Page342.htm

A word about dosing. There are about 10 DS kids on Ginkgo Biloba and all have had memory and functional improvements. We have figured out dose matters. If you don’t take enough, you don’t see much difference. But the good news is, more doesn’t hurt you. If you take too much, you have wasted a little money and you might possibly get an upset stomach.

The researchers at Stanford have demonstrated that an excess of inhibitory signals is the problem. In other words, there are too many red lights in the system and making the green lights greener doesn’t help, we have to turn off some of the red lights.

We have anecdotally worked out about 2.5 mg per pound for the extract formula for GB. For example, a 70 pound child would take 180 mg per day. There is also a ‘whole leaf’ formula which comes in a liquid form (may be easier for kids that can’t swallow pills yet). The whole leaf is at a dose of 10mg per pound.

GAIA Herbs (www.gaiaherbs.com) has a liquid whole leaf and can be purchased from Frontier Natural Products Co-op (www.frontiercoop.com). Other whole leafs had alcohol in them.

The really odd thing about the sudden jump in learning is the decided lack of input on my part for some of these things.

When she counted to 100, it was not because we had been working on it recently. It wasn't even 100's day at school.

She was counting how many times her stuffed cat 'jumped' rope. This is the really amazing thing about all this.

I *have* used the tens and teens boards found here : http://www.montessorimaterials.org/math.htm#teen and they are hanging on the wall right now. We have also been working on signing numbers up to 20. I know sign also helps her 'see' the numbers better.

We do a lot of counting through out the day, and adding and subtracting.

You can also print out the moveable alphabet there. That's what I use to practice spelling words. Once cut out, they fit nicely in to the cheap tackle boxes at Wal-Mart. http://www.montessorimaterials.org/lang.htm#mov

I have also used many of the early child hood type hands on activities out on the web for her. They come in 'themes' so I could change it often to make it seem new, while still working on the same old skill. This includes working on writing skills. They have lots of tracer 'books' that I laminate and she practices on using vis'a'vis pens.

I noticed this was one of the sites Trisha's mom had included -

http://www.childcareland.com/free.html If I were starting over I would BUY her sets, they are fantastic and these alone have helped SO MUCH...

http://www.kinderprintables.com/math.htm

http://www.kidzone.ws/tracers/index.htm - you can also download the tracer font and make your own. I use it for her spelling words as a way to help her study them.

The problem I am having now is she has learned almost all the preschool/kgdr concepts and hands on becomes harder to get in 1st grade level materials. I do have lots of stuff in my files that I use too, I added just a couple of examples.

Sorry this is not very complete and not well thought out. Lots of background noise here that I can't filter out... :-)

Feel to ask questions and if you would like to access my files on AOL my screen name is doihavtasay1. I have LOTS of stuff in there and seem to be adding more every week.

I am curious... are you trying the gingko too?

Thanks Carol. I was but didn't see much difference with Sam but I'm thinking maybe I had the dose too low or a bad brand. I may try this again with the Kirkman brand. I think it's so hard to tell what's working and what's not when you have so many supplements going into a child.

Thanks for all the resources. I'm always looking for more stuff to work into Sam's homeschooling.
