Guest guest
Hi Jackie It is my husband, Rich, who has cml, so obviously no problems with periods...... however, we know many female cml'ers and a great number of them report period changes... either stopping altogether or getting much heavier and more frequent. Guest guest
Hi Jackie, I have had some unusual times but I also had some irregular issues prior to and knew mine were caused by stress. Obviously the first few years after dx was pretty stressful and adding other events that took place in my life I kind of just speculated what the problem was. Having it twice a month and for longer periods. I am only 40 year sold dx at 35 but I swear I have started menopause and I also believe it's due to the year of interferon & ARC as well as Gleevec. Last year I told my Onc all I was going through and he ran some test on my hormone levels and they came back fine? Why then for the last 4 years have I endured severe night sweats the week or so prior to my menstrual cycle beginning? Maybe this is pre menopausal symptoms? As for yourself you may want to at-least evaluate your current stress level To see if that could be it. I know my OBGYN gave me birth control to get me back to normal when this very same thing occurred. ez Message: 1 Date: Fri, 13 Jan 2006 13:58:07 +1100 From: " Jackie Petropoulos " <blueshar@...> Subject: irregular periods Hi everyone, I was wondering if any of you had noticed a change in your periods since having CML or taking Glivec? Twice now I have finished a period and then a week later I will start spotting again, the time before it went on for 11 days (after the period had finished) and in the end my GP gave some pills to stop the bleeding. I have had the same thing again. Also I have noticed that my periods have been unusually drawn out and quite heavy. Jackie

I can time when my period is going to start just by the night sweats. During the first year or so of Gleevec, my cycle changed from being every 28 days to every 21-23 days and were extremely heavy but then it went back to normal again. No one has been able to concretely associate Gleevec with hormone levels (not that I've seen in any medical journals anyway) but that doesn't mean that a correlation doesn't exist. I suspect that it does since many women have complained about period issues over the years. Take care, Tracey

I was dx in aug. 2005 and I am 36 years old and I have noticed my periods changing alot over the last five months. they are much heavier, last longer than my " normal " and quite honestly I can't keepup with it sometimes and this last month's came a week early. My oncology dr. has referred me to an OB/GYN to have my ovaries checked. I think it has to do with the medicine, gleevec becasue prior to knowing I have CML my periods were different and gleevec is the only new thing or drug I take. have dr. ever talked to you about a hysterectomy? not that i want one. I would almost just deal with my period for now. I haven't had any night sweats etc. well let me know if you have any advice or " magic " answers. thanks, kelly
Guest guest
I guess mine did change now that I think on it. I'm glad to read that someone elses went from a 28 day cycle to a 21 and got heavier.Mine did also. It'd be interesting to find out why. I got cramps off and on too once I started the gleevce and I hadn't ever had them before. Now I'm waiting for it to start up again after the baby and it hasen't. That has me alittle worried but I've heard that if your breastfeeding sometimes you won't have one...gah! This is the first full month not feeding her that way so maybe I'll get one in Feb...Strange. That is what led me to diagnosis, I went to my OB GYN and she's the one who discovered my cancer. I also started to get several pre-cancerous cysts or whatever that had to be removed. Found one in my breast too, and that all took place within the first two years of Gleevec treatment, or maybe it's just the CML. Anyway, it is interesting that you say you had strange cramping in the beginning of Gleevec treatment. My very first day of dosing I had excruciating cramps and bleeding, and it was not menstruation. I panicked and called the hospital. It happened three times - each occurring once a year, and so bad that I was rushed to the hospital emergency room and they could find no reason. I guess some people have strange reactions to Gleevec, and no ones knows why. It is curious that once in a while, if I stop Gleevec for a few days and start up again, I get a pinkish discharge for a day, and then it stops. So it does create internal bleeding and cramping for me - but only sometimes. Strange, huh? - Lynne A.
