Holistic approach to AIDS issue sought

The Hindu 17 September 2001, New Delhi.

JAIPUR, SEPT.16. Anthropologists and sociologists have sought a holistic

approach to the issue of HIV and AIDS. The high risk groups, some of whom happen

to be from nomadic and ethnic communities needed a differently focussed

attention, those who attended a symposium, " Discourse of AIDS:Anthropological

perspective " here at the Rajasthan University over the weekend said.

The key speaker, Dr. O' Neil, director, Center for Aboriginal Health

Research, Manitoba University, Canada, noted that anthropologists with their

specialized techniques could bring about hitherto hidden facts about sexuality.

The phenomenal growth of HIV and AIDS cases was a reality which had direct links

to behavior of high risk groups from ethnic, caste and tribal societies, he

said.

Prof.O'Neil said that the Government as will as the NGOs operating in the sector

should consider introducing culturally oriented programmes with the

participation of targeted population. AIDS epidemic was a calamity which needed

inter-sectoral approach involving those in the fields of women and child

development, health, education and even culture, he said.
