Guest guest
Try a video. I think the one we used was called was called "Potty Time." Had songs. Sometimes it gets into their heads better when they "see it" too. Mindy How can he prompt himself without our help??? Casey understands about going to potty, but with our prompt, he does fine. He pees on his own regardless. He knows all about potty, but he does not go to the potty by himself. How can we change that? I get frustrated. kk
Guest guest
My suggestion is to wait til warm weather - assuming it's cold where you are now- and then stop prompting him esp while outside. When he has an accident, run him to the potty and then have him change his own clothes. I remember stayed with prompting for what seemed like a very long time. And when I started to slack off one summer and she had to come in from her beloved outdoors and spend more time changing her clothes, she caught on that it was to her benefit to get herself to the potty before she was wet. :-) It took a while for it to sink in. Up til last year, she would still have an occasional accident at home- never in public. ( except for the time she had a blood draw on a full bladder. low tone kids have a hard time crying AND holding it. ) Be patient, be persisitant, and it will come. <g> Which reminds me!! Did you know if a child is blowing, they can't tighten their anal sphinchter?!?! This is really good to know for constipation issues. Get a basket of blow type toys- noise makers, bubble things, straws, whistes etc... to use while trying to poo! Guest guest
Perhaps he can not feel when his bladder fills? If this is the case it is a very serious issue that I would persue! At our hospital we are going to study bladder issues in kids with DS and see if they are related to the spine. just had surgery on his spine. BUT he is 16 and success happens much more when kids are young. NOW that I have found so amny other kids with bladder issues I see toilet issues as a sign that there may be problems! We were on the local news channel talking about this very serious issue in kids with DS. has serious hydronephrosis and we are praying his kidneys are not perminently damaged due to the pee backing up into the kidneys! His urologist was on the news as well warning all families who had kids with DS to have toileting problems checked out with a urodynmamic study by around the age of 5. Best of LUCK!
