Cell phones that track kids

The New York Times reports that over the years, many parents have daydreamed of

being able to outfit their children with tracking devices so that they could

instantly find their child's location. Now, this dream is about to become a

reality because of G.P.S. technology. At least five companies have built G.P.S.

tracking ability into something extremely popular among children and young

adults: cell phones. One such phone is Wherifone, which sells for about $100.

The phone is intended for both the very young and the very old; and has no

number pad. Instead, it has a few buttons which can be preset to specific

numbers. One other button calls up an address book that can be used to dial

other numbers. The phone can receive calls from any number. However, this ability

can be limited by parents through the company's web site. Parents can pinpoint

the phone's location by logging onto the web site and choosing to

" locate " the phone. The phone's location then appears as an icon on

the map. In addition, parents can use " photo view " to see existing

satellite photos to see buildings that are located near the phone... http://www.nytimes.com
