Guest guest
As a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society patient advocate I get to represent LLS in different settings. The last meeting I was sent to was the Somerset County (NJ) Cancer Coalition Meeting. It turns out that the state of New Jersey has Cancer Coalitions in each county. What they do is coordinate the cancer programs going on in the county and in the state so that they all have information about what is going on. At my first meeting that I attended a representative from the American Cancer Society came to talk about the Cancer Prevention Study-3. http://www.cancer.org/cps3. Since this is nationwide I thought I would announce it here. This study is for people who are between ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer. The study will take place at the relay for life but the person does not have to walk. They must show up and take part in the survey and donate a blood sample which will be saved. They also must be willing to take part in follow up surveys. For the details read the website. You can also find locations in your state. I urge you as a cancer patient to tell your cancer free friends and relatives to participate in this study. It is free. The only problem might be finding a vein to take the blood. I have not read the information about the study, but as a former researcher I decided, while swimming, that I know a research study that should be done. Since CLL is found by a CBC which most people don't get I thought that oncologists should partner with GP's or Internists or Gynocologists to have a study in which a healthy 30 or 40 year old or whatever age gives a tube of blood which will be saved or analyzed the the results saved somewhere. Then later if this person develops CLL or another cancer the first blood sample should be compared to the blood sample of the cancer patients to see if some markers could have been identified earlier. Now I have NOT looked at CPS-3 to see what they are going to do so these are my own thoughts. I am going run this idea by my doctor to see what he thinks. Jeannette E.
