Hi:

Is grapefruit still a no=no with gleevec? I love it and I crave it--

grapefruit that is. They are so big and juicy now. When I eat one, I

try to eat it long after taking the gleevec. Any facts or opinions? MJ

Everytime I eat one I throw-up. Doc says that the liver enzimes that

break down the fruit also break down gleevec so when you eat the fruit

your liver makes more enzimes to break it down and so there are more

enzimes in the system to break down the gleevce... causeing me to get

a bigger dose of the gleevec than I would normaly absorb.

GARP! lol

:) It sounds like the doc knows what he's talking about.

Hi Dan,

Grapefruit interferes with a lot of drugs because there is an enzyme in

it that is metabolized through the liver. This can alter the

metabolization of various drugs, making their serum levels

inconsistent.

Grapefruit increases the serum level of Gleevec, meaning that it will

be more potent than it would be otherwise. In other words, if you're

taking 400mg and you add grapefruit, you might have serum levels which

would be equivalent to an 800mg dose. If you already suffer from side

effects, these will be enhanced if you eat grapefruit.

I wouldn't want to mess around with my serum levels on a regular basis

but if you really, really love grapefruit, and want to indulge yourself

once in a blue moon, I wouldn't worry about it, but you should ask your

doctor to be sure.

Take care,

Tracey

Strange as it seems. Grapefruit was the one thing I truly missed and

craved while on Gleevec. My Dr. said it was not ok to have at all.

I did have to have several drug holidays while on it and I certainly

got my quota in then! Your Dr. may have a different opinion, see

what he says-good luck,it makes you want something more when told you

can't have it.....

Thank you for that learned explanation, Tracey. I was also

wondering about the ban on grapefruits and gf juice, which I also

like and miss.

I have had all of those tests done. Also nothing I did including diet

had any affect on the candida so I am thinking it is from the seven

mercury fillings in my mouth that I can't afford to have removed. The

only test that came out bad was the adrenal test, she said it was the

worst she had ever seen. But why would low adrenals affect the way my

body reacts to grapefruit????

Also no matter what I do I can't get my PH level near normal because the

candida is so severe that I am picking bubbly slime out of my throat day

and night every minute or so. Really bad but don't know what to do to

change it after having tried everything. I am on a permanent diet of

vegies, fruits, fish and never touch dairy, meat, sugar or processed

foods but it makes no difference.

Been on this diet now for over eight years. ONly fruit I eat is

occasional fresh blueberries.

candida

the liver cleanse is the most effective tool to deal with candida.

candida diminishes in the presence of of bile (which is lacking with a

liver full of stones)

and candida spreads when waste is forced to remain in the gut and

moves upward from the colon into the small intestine and stomach

also pau darco is helpful along with xylitol, not eating after 7 or

8pm is essential

I am on a group for autistic kids and we deal with yeast alot. What

we do to treat yeast is GSE (grapefruit seed extract) - unless of course you

react, which maybe you do. Start with 2-4 drops in juice in a.m., then

increase slowly to 5 drops in am and 5 drops in pm. Also, Candex or

Candidase can help, biotin daily (start at 500mcg, and slowly increase). My

6 yo dd takes 15-20,000 mcg a day now, but take along with magnesium for

absorption. Also, are you taking a probiotic? My dd takes 50 billion -

Klaire's Detox Support, once a day, or sometimes twice a day. But start out

at a much lower amount and work up. Apples and apple juice increase yeast,

but ACV is supposed to help it. Oil of Oregano fights yeast and bacteria.

Eat lots of fresh garlic. These are a few things we do. If you still can't

get it under control, you can try prescriptions like Nystatin from your

doctor but it tends to recur after stopping sometimes. Don't take any

antibiotics unless you absolutely have to. You can do a test from Great

Plains called an OAT test that will tell you exactly how much yeast you have

and what types. Yeast is a beast. We do all these things and can control

yeast a bit, but still have problems. Most multivitamins will increase

yeast, as will the B vitamins, but we at least can get a handle on it.

Thanks Sheri, have done everything you suggested (even best grapefruit

seed drops) without success. Only thing I didn't try is the OAT test.

?? I still think the problem is I have 7 mercury fillings and a few

years back got arsenic poisoning---very bad combo I understand.

Wish I had the $$$$ to get the fillings out.

AND YES, all things are possible with God and to them that

believe----sometimes that's a battle too LOL.

those test results must be in the upper third quadrant or else less than could

mean you are not getting enough thyroid hormone into the cell wall---

get me your results---

along with

Anti-M--antibody tests

tsh--

reverse t3 test as well---

diabetes is a sure sign of yeast---what is your blood fasting number---

must get correct testing--

there is a reason for yeast--

That's interesting. Is it safe to do a " mild " version of a liver cleanse on

kids (if that's even possible)? My 6 yr old daughter has mild autism and

one of the biggest issues is yeast which most ASD kids can't ever get under

control. We've never done anything for her liver, other than artichoke

extract supplements, which now she can't take. She does low oxalate diet.

Seems like we've tried every diet out there. She seems to have issues with

a lot of food and the only thing I feel we can do is remove the foods so she

doesn't react. Ie. If she eats high oxalate foods and most veggies, she

has accidents, even at school, so I'm forced to limit them greatly. When

she eats no fruits and veggies, she has no accidents, but I'm always worried

about her nutrition. She eats a lot of beef and chicken and rice, and

melons.

Steph,

I wonder if Boutenko's strategy of using green smoothies might be the

breakthrough you are searching for in your diet? I just discovered her books,

the latest of which is " Green Smoothie Revolution " . I have had the experience of

trying many diets and benefiting from them for a short time, then plateauing.

describes reaching similar plateaus eating a raw vegetarian diet and

then finding a solution for the stalemate in blended raw greens. I have been

experimenting with green smoothies for a while and think they might be what I

have been looking for. Perhaps that is worth looking into for your needs. Good

wishes to you in your quest for health!

All the best,

Terry

I would do that Terry but I don't have the will power for nothing but

greens and green drinks for a year. I would eat someones arm off if

they got too close to me or the ass end off of the nearest dog.
