Guest guest
From Ideal Lives: KathyR Have you tried using Social Stories to help your child conquer those pesky social situations that seem to trip us all up? Here is a little Trouble Shooting Checklist to use when you are gathering information to create a Social Story for your child. 1. Describe target behavior (how they are responding now) 2. Function of Inappropriate Behavior (what are they getting out of it, i.e. attention, avoiding something they don't like) 3. What strengths does your child have that could help in this situation (i.e. they aren't shy) 4. What weaknesses are causing them problems in this situation (i.e. don't realize when someone else is bored) 5. Areas of Special Interest (really like sports car) 6. Additional Information that is important: So let's put it all together: For example: Your child getting sent to the office for yelling in the halls at school (#1) because they really want friends and peer attention (#2). To seek out this attention they strike up conversations in the hallway with classmates (#3), unfortunately they don't realize when they have picked an inappropriate conversation topic or the classmate is getting bored (#4) so when the classmate blows them off and walks away or says something mean to them, they respond by getting upset and yelling. So your social story needs to help your learn specific skills: What topics typical kids his age might want to talk about (especially those where there is a shared interest like cars) (#5) Acceptable ways to strike up a conversation Social cues that the other person is done talking How to move on gracefully (when things go well AND when they don't) By doing practise conversations through the social story, your child gains both skills and confidence is his ability.
