Guest guest
Is it safe to give ground flax to a 14 month old? My son is having a terrible time with constipation. I have been using Dr. L's recipe for constipation relief for and it works well. I have heard that some people may be allergic to flax and am wondering if it safe for a baby. I would put it into his cereal/prune juice mix I give him if it is safe. He has swallowing problems so I don't feel safe giving the over the counter fiber mixes. Thanks, Lee Ann
Guest guest
I have no idea LeeAnn. If you are worried about him choking on the OTC fiber, wouldn't this bother him too? I guess you could try a little bit mixed with his food and if he can handle it, increase it slowly? I use a boiled down prune juice for . Tastes great, no choking hazard, no rough flax seed to irritate the GI tract and it tastes really good. Guest guest
Hi Carol, Does the boiled down prune juice work better that the ready made juice? I have never had any luck with straight prune juice for . I do use Dr. L's mix for , but I also add some mineral oil, otherwise it still does not work for her. I think the flax softens her BM and the oil helps it move. I think..at least she can GO with that mixture. I have heard the otc fiber can expand in the throat and cause choking. Ben is having penetration and silent aspiration. He does not swallow well. It pools in his throat. He is not on a feeding tube because he does do ok with thickened formula. I know I can not use mineral oil for him because of his aspirating. I was concerned about the pooling and using the over the counter fibers.....especially if they really do expand. I am not sure if flax would do the same thing or not. Guest guest
Hi Tammi, I am sure it would mix pretty well in the formula/cereal mix I make for him. I was not sure what amount to use or if I should. How old was your little boy? Our ped really likes us to use prune juice, but I have not had a lot of luck with it for either of my two with DS and constipation. Guest guest
I too tried to use prunes but it never worked for him. Collin was under a year when I gave it to him. I ground it up. I used flax seed and ground it up. He is now 22 months old and as long as I give him fruit 2x a day he is fine. My ped is a down syndrome expert since his first son has ds so I really trust him. I just put in his baby food. Good luck ground flax > > > > Is it safe to give ground flax to a 14 month old? My son is having a > terrible time with constipation. Guest guest
Hello Lee Ann, could you please send me Dr. L's recipie? I was just talking with the parents of a little boy with DS last Sunday that I met at a museum and they were telling me about the bad time they're having with the constipation issue. Many thanks, > > > > I have no idea LeeAnn. > > If you are worried about him choking on the OTC fiber, wouldn't > this bother him too? > > I guess you could try a little bit mixed with his food and if he > can handle it, increase it slowly? > > > > I use a boiled down prune juice for . Guest guest
Thanks Tami, I will give it a try. Poor boy needs some help going! Guest guest
Hello, I started out with Dr L's exact recipe, but changed it some for . I mix equal amounts of ground flax to mashed prunes, then add enough prune juice to thin it to a drinkable consistency. This was Dr.L's recipe (close to it anyhow. I changed it some by adding mineral oil) I used a coffee bean grinder to grind the flax for a while, until I realized you can buy flax already ground. I blend 1 cup of flax to 1 cup of prunes in the blender and slowly add the prune juice until I like the consistency. I store the mix in the refrigerator. When I give the prune mix to I add around 1 tbs of mineral oil to every 1/2 cup of the mixture. She gets 1/2 cup a day. I was giving her straight mineral oil, under the doctors direction, for a while. But it was not good. She had very little control over her BMs. She would leak and always had messy undies because of the oil. She was having an easier time passing BM's with just the oil, but they were still way too big. The flax and prunes help keep things soft and more normal looking while the mineral oil helps things sliding along. No more holding it until she is ready to pop! And no more accidents because of straight mineral oil. If you can do it without the mineral oil it is best. But some kids need that extra help. is just a difficult case. Maybe someone else has access to Dr.L's actual recipe. I know mine is really close. I can't remember where I put mine. Guest guest
I think just heard that same thing about fiber on that pediacast! I didn't know that. :-) If things pool... I would worry too. Flax is kinda prickly, but if it's added to other slippery things, maybe it wouldn't bother him? I honestly don't know, sorry!! I also heard on the pediacast that prune juice works by pulling moisture into the GI tract because of the type of sugar in it, not the fiber content. I didn't know that either. So giving boiled down prune juice would be like giving a natural form of lactolouse, kewl eh?? If you missed the link and want to go listen to the pediacast ( it's really good ) here it is -http://www.pediascribe.com/podcast/ Carol in IL Mom to seven including , 6 with TOF, AVcanal, GERD, LS, Asthma, subglottal stenosis, and DS.My problem is not how I look. Guest guest
Hi Carol, I knew for sure the fiber capsules can get stuck and swell in a persons throat. I was not sure about the ground fiber, but thought it might. Flax is just a ground up grain so I was thinking it might be safe. The other thing I wondered about was a possible allergic reaction to flax. But the only way to know about that is to give it and see what happens. I am going to try adding a little bit to his cereal. Prune juice does seem to work for him but he just hates the taste and won't finish his bottle. His weight is boarder line on the low side so I really don't want him refusing food. We have not needed to bump up his calories yet, but we may be getting close. His height is at the top of the chart while his weight is at the bottom. Flax probably wouldn't add much change in taste I wouldn't think. I don't think the flax would expand like the over the counter fiber mixes. Maybe if I spread a teaspoon of flax out over a days worth of bottles it would be ok. Thanks for the link! Lee Ann > > I think just heard that same thing about fiber on that pediacast!
