Dear Parents,

We have successfully completed our research study funded by the NDSS

investigating the benefits of learning how to ride a standard two

wheel bike in children with Down Syndrome aged 8-15 years. The first

year of the study, we got 56% of the children to ride without

training wheels in 5 days (75 minutes per day for 5 consecutive

days=6 hours and 15 minutes of individualized training). The second

summer we got 61% success rate.

Before I publish these results detailing the benefits to the

children, I would like to know, what is typical in this age range. In

other words, what % of the children in your group in this age range

can sit on a bike without training wheels and ride the bike more then

30 feet without help?

If your child with DS is in the age range of 8-15 years as of today,

can he or she ride a bicycle at least 30 feet without training wheels

and without you holding onto them? Please email me at

ulrichd@... with your answer by November 20th (yes they can

ride or no they can not ride) and also include your child's birth

date.

Thank you.
