This is a terrific resource Mindy Lee :-) Thanks for sharing it! I am printing it off right now.

I noticed the Numicon Math manipulatives are very similar to some the Montessori ones. There are many resources on the net you could use to make those same type and save some money. :-)

I use the tens and teens board for to teach her. It works really well with sign langauge as a visual because you sign '10' with your thumb, then the number for the teen. For example 15, is the sign for '10' + '5' ( the sign for 5) which is the same as the teen boards using 10 as a base, then adding the other number. :-) Kewl eh??? Love it when a plan falls into place! This continues on in to the 20's and so on.

You could also produce some of the numicon matrials using the math flip book I posted!!!

I haven't read the whole thing, yet... LOTS to go over here. Thanks again!!!

I am interested in the numicon. Does anyone have experience using this? If so, is it worth the investment? and how do you purchase it in the US? What do you purchase to start off with? I would like to compare to montessori. My problem with the montesori is you have to make so many things yourself and the some of the resources are not compatable with my computer. I wish I had someone that could help me with the making the materials, but as I am still fending for myself and it becomes so time comsuming. thank you! I can't help you with the Numicon, but I would be interested in hearing more about it. It sure looks a lot like Montesorri.

You can buy Montessori items pretty cheap, well some of them. And there are groups on for making materials, a lot of it is from computer generated items.. though not all!

What doesn't work with your PC?

Do you have "Teaching People Math to People with DS" It has a lot of reproducibles in the back and many great ideas for manipulatives. I don't think it matters what kind of manipulative you use really- the big point is to use as many visuals as possible.

You offer such great advice!! I guess I am looking for a step by step guideline as to what I should be working on along with the materials. The education support pack is wonderful! I need to review that too. I think montesorri and Numicon are very similar(from what you say & I have read). Kumon has some great flashcards that you can practice writing the numbers and then wipe them off and erase them and also has the Dot system up to 30.(although my son won't trace letters yet) Your websites for montesori so far are great when I can get to them. I feel like a kid in a candy store, so much to get into! I have 2 computers, a slow one and a fast one. The fast one won't let me get to the montesori printouts, it is always incripted and the slow one will but it takes forever. By the time I finally get to the website, Blues Clues is over and my son gets into

everything! Our slow printer is in the bedroom and my husband doesn't like when I print things at 2 in the morning, ha, ha I also don't know when to start certain concepts and I am not sure where to buy some of the montesorri materials or what to buy. A seminar on both systems would be great! I also feel we spend so much time making things, flashcards, books, etc and I am not that crafty. And I become alittle overwhelmed by all of the reading. My son (will be 5 in Dec) and will go to kindergarten next year, Do they help you make things like the examples in the book? Or are you still pretty much on your own? Kathy,

It's not really that hard at this age. :-) He should be learning to recognize his numbers and be able to say/sign them. Start working on reading the number words as well.

He should be able to rote count at least to 10 ( that is just memorizing which number comes next)

One to one correspondence to 10. That is actually understanding the the number 5 is a symbol for 5 objects. Harder to 'get' then rote counting for sure.

On my other operating system I have a bookmark for a scope and sequence from a public school. I will send it off.

I only use the Montessori things that she needs or I think she will understand. I am not going to introduce her to fractions for example for quite some time, while Montessori introduces those in the beginning!

There are SCADS of Montessori books from the library and many that give complete instructions for making the manipulative's from everyday items. It doesn't have to be real time consuming! If it is... you are never going to get around to USING them. ;-)

I highly recommend the Vort books for a road map as to what to do next- here is the site. http://www.vort.com/ If you place an order, you have to say you are a professional. :-) Or they won't sell them to you.

The math book for people with DS is also wonderful as a scope and sequence source as well as homemade math manipulatives. Don't forget that counting plates and silver ware is math! So is sorting socks and laundry into piles. You can count so many things in the course of day with out ever having to make a single thing. Pouring water into different size containers while in the tub, or out in the sand box teaches volume and measuring. If you can get hold of a kdgr or preschool math curriculum from your library and read it, you can do it at home pretty easily.

Check out our files in the education section of our home page. LOTS of neat things in there!! I just downloaded the snowman counting game that taught one to one. The original has the kids putting clothes pins on the circles, but she didn't have the strength to open them, so we used magnetic bingo markers. The kids LOVE those because the reward is using the 'magic' wand to pick them all up. You can find them here :

There are some math games using household items written up in the files and don't forget computer games.

I think the biggest key to success is to flood them with many different opportunities to do math. Whether it's in the environment or something made. The more repetition the better as it's BORING other wise. So use your imagination and make it fun.

Where is your son in his math? Maybe I can think of more things if I know where he's at.

Thanks, I still would like to hear more about the numicon!! And your right, at this age, the math is not that hard, its when he gets older. At this point, his writing skills are not close to his other skills and you have to be more clever in your work with him to do more hands on activity and a varity of it to keep it interested. That's why I like the things you offer My other children were happy doing worksheet after worksheet and could write letters and numbers at 5. It was much easier to help them. (I have 4 boys) Take care Kathy The education support pack is great! It answered a few of my questions and the vort books are on order, hopefully I will get them today!l Carol in IL <ps1272000@...> wrote: Kathy, It's not really that hard at this age. :-) He should be learning to recognize his numbers and be able to say/sign them.
