Does anyone have a good website for simple things to put onto index cards.

I don't understand...isn't it already loaded with boardmaker or dynasyms?

What do you need index cards for?

I love Picture This by Silver Lining Media for visual strategies - has real pictures - but it is not free.

This is Hogden visual strategy site: http://www.usevisualstrategies.com/pictures.html

The Use Visual Strategies site http://www.usevisualstrategies.com/ has pictures to print out. Check heading at top.

For free - drawings - try Do To Learn http://www.dotolearn.com/index.htm Go down to make a schedule and there are free cards to print out.

We are getting ready for his MV4 dynavox, which is an augmentative communication device, and it has a touch screen. I need to find simple things like faces of feelings, foods, daily stuff. Animals. Stuff that a 8 year old would need in daily life.

Any links would be appreciated.

He doesn't have the dynavox yet. We are wanting to practice before we get it. We just filled out all the paperwork for it. It might be a while before we get the machine.

I get it now....we did this too but I already had boardmaker installed on the computer so I could make up the symbol cards and practice before we got the dynavox. If you go to the speakingof speech site and go to the materials exchange you can download tons of boardmaker pics for free...those are the actual symbols that will be installed unless you ask for dynasyms (which I didn't like). I've got a huge boxful of these that I printed from the computer way before I could afford boardmaker....there are tons of them. Just in case you ever decide to order boardmaker it's only $150 for parents and $450 for teachers. Nobody told me this till after I bought them for the full price. Grrrrr.

It's cool cause you can practice spreading them out in whatever array he can scan and then gradually build up so you can use more buttons on the dynavox. That sucker scared the heck out of me at first but now I love it and 's doing well with it. Saying the word then hitting the dynavox word. The first thing she learned was "I want to eat" of course. There's a boardmaker list at with tons of ideas and picture exchanges and tips from the real pros. Good luck I hope it doesn't take you as long to get yours as it did us.

Have fun!!!

About 2 years but I think it may have more the problem of the SLP who was handling things THRU the rep. Apparently the rep down here is not all that together either...if it starts to be too long get in touch with dynavox directly and give them the rep's name. They actually should be pushing for it as they get a pretty hefty commission on the sale (which is why it is difficult to nail them down for actual help after the sale has been made) Our SLP is doing all the training.

CAROL- I'm on nomail on Boardmakerlist right now...too much going on but when I get back on I'll forward the info. If anyone wants tips on how to print them out and laminate and velcro etc. let me know. I went on there and just screamed HELP! and got alot of it.

<<How old were all of your children when you got the communication boards??>>

is 17 but she also has Autism. We first bought her a GoTalk machine last year; it's a cheap device (only $250 LOL) but simple to record on and it really helps her to explain to someone new who is unable to understand her "language" that "gogs" mean "I want hot dogs" and "szhoosh" means "Juice" etc. She's very visual and we've used alot of visual supports with her to preview what is going to happen next. We still encourage speech strongly but her apraxia makes it very difficult for her to be understood. We started looking into a Dynavox FIVE years ago and we got the runaround for quite awhile. I would have been happy with a $1000 laptop but medicaid will only cover an $8000 Dynavox. Go figure. I wish I had bought her something like the GoTalk device years ago as it has lessened her frustration tremendously. I repeat however it is imperative to continue the verbal language if the child is capable of speaking. Some autistic kids are not. This communication device was another thing I swore I would not resort to with her and wish that I had done much sooner.

I've also programmed in all her medical diagnoses her meds and her doctors, address, phone, etc. and all the info is then uploaded into the computer as a backup. If you go with a simpler version you can put in photos and get a 4,9, or 20 picture display, with 7 different levels giving you a max of 140 messages. The dynavox can grow to Hawkings proportions. If I could only program it to clean the house we'd be all set.

We had to wait awhile before could comprehend symbol drawings rather than photos but photos can be used in all of these also. I haven't learned how to import them into dynavox yet. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to computers :-)

We were also able to try alot of different devices thanks to our SLP who brought them over and lent them to us for awhile....saved me spending money on something that she would grow out of too quickly. Ask your speech therapists if they'll let you try one. The first one we got to try 5 years ago had been programmed previously for an adult and kept finding the "drinks" page and asking "Do you have any beer please?" Fun.

Much too much info I'm sure

I'm curious. Did you have to purchase it on your own or did your

insurance company pay for it? You mentioned that he " qualified " .

Thanks,
