We started PT at 8 months. Before that it was me and the home teacher going through the stuff in the Gross Motor Skills for Children with Ds book. It was a timetable that worked for us. Now Eliza is 16 months and does PT once a week on land and once a week on water and loves both. Do you have a home teacher? Ask them about their specialty areas - ours here vary so some are PT, SPeech or OT specialities and you can put off other specialists depending on your home teacher. Gwyn,

I am assuming that you are using ECI.  We started ECI at 2 months.   My daughter

is 3 ½ months old and they have her working on stuff like using hip helpers,

mouth exercises, and a bunch of belly time.  Are you guys doing anything different.  Our lady comes 2 times a week, they suggested

1 x a month and I and my husband both said we would like to see them 2x a week.

Please let me know.  Yesterday I

consulted with a private PT and she rated Emma at a 1 month old development but

when I see ECI they said she is right on track, so I am a little confused and a

little taken by the evaluation.  Anyways

any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Thank you

Leann,

My son will be 4 mos old next Tuesday and I started PT at 2 1/2 mos.

I didn't think that he really needed it at the time and he is still

meeting the " typical milestones " but I wanted to make sure that I

did not miss anything with him. They initially wanted to come only

every other month but I insisted on every month. Do what you think

We started our PT pretty late, but only because had very severe heart defects and we were just happy she wasn't blue. :-) Her PT began full swing after her repear at 10 months. We had PT before that, but it was very limited as to what we could do with her. I was very grateful for all her therapists. Those first few years are so important and so many stages to get through. I found therapists whom we really liked and knew what they were doing. I had to fire a couple of them too. If you don't like who you get, look around for different ones. Ask other parents who they like in your area. A nice advantage to having therapists is they often can avert a problem before it starts and the kids do grow fast! Even if it sometimes feels slow ;-) It also made life easier and gave me more time to just enjoy the kids. You still have to do the therapies yourself during the week, but having someone

help you with ideas and plans, was very helpful.ChiLuvCali@... wrote: Your a wonderful group !!! Thank you all for sharing your experiences about the progress of your babies. Hi ,

Yes, I’m

using ECI. I am going to switch programs next month as we are moving to a

different area of town, so it will be interesting to see if they have anything

different to say. I have only had 1 appt so far and our next one is next week

and the last with the current OT. Did they use the HELP scale to assess Emma? I

had them send me a copy so I can evaluate Mark on an ongoing basis. That way, I

know if he is meeting the milestones and he is spot on at this point. Did your

insurance pay for the private PT? I don’t know what to think about the

different evals? Is this your 1st child? Mark is my 1st

child so it’s hard for me to look at him and say “oh, he’s

not doing x so we should work with him on that” – that’s why

the HELP scale is very useful!

I’m also

going to move Mark into a place called Sammy’s House starting in the

spring. They are a day care facility that specializes in kids with disabilities

and they work with the kids to meet goals based on the HELP scale. I can’t

wait to get him here as the daycare facility where he is now is not familiar

with working with kids with DS.

Would like to chime in as well:-)

Our daughther is 8 1/2 months old, and services began when she was 5 months

old. First the Early Interventionist(EI) started visiting once a week and

then I had to request PT. She was having head lag, and for some reason, the

EI did not not bring up the idea of bringing in a PT. I told the EI, she is

still having head lag, then she put in the request. The PT started coming

out in August, when my daughter was 7 months old. Now, we are having the

same problem with speech therapy. However, the case manager told our EI

that they don't start ST until the child is around 1-2. So, go figure,

right? I told our EI that we were having some difficulties with feeding,

this is the only way we can get a consulation with the feeding specialist

who happens to be a Speech Therapist. The paperwork is in, lets see if they

will permit the feeding specialist to do an evaluation.

Anyone know when OT usually begins?

I don't see the point of the EI if, they can't even realize the type of

service the child needs. or maybe we just have a bad Interventionist. Any

suggestions???

It seems as though they don't want to provide services.

I think that each child should be evaluated by PT, OT, ST from the begining

and every so often to check where the child is at and if any services are

required. But, things don't always work as you want it to. Sorry, had to

vent.

The whole topic can get me really worked up when i am in a bad mood, but i'm in a pretty good mood so you all are lucky! Anyway it varies so much state to state and county to county. In my state they told me EI teacher right away once a week. PT after a year. Speech at 2 years. OT when they are out of EI (so around 3). Then i started talking to parents and every parent who went with their said program said I wished started sooner. Most parents (myselft included) will either pay for a consult earlier or go through private insurance. I think I said I started my daughter in PT at 10 months - it was actually 8 months and speech at 10months. Both through my own insurance. EI started picking up PT at 15 months and i am working on getting speech picked up by them (my daughter is 16

months). And i plan on getting a private OT consult soon. This is my program here in Northern California. Many states have it far better - NY and Minnesota seem really good, and many states have it far worse. I found the best way to figure it out is through other parents in your area (many have regional ) or a local parent advocacy group. Another important thing is to NEVER beat yourself up by thinking "Oh i should of started something sooner." We are all trying the best we can and have our little ones best interest at heart.

Actually, we were asking about PT, and the OT said that when they are this

age (mine is 10 mos), that the PT and OT do basically the same thing. She

works with his gross motor skills, etc. Does this sound reasonable?

Hi Gwyn,

I was wondering if you know where I could get a copy of the HELP scale. I

have never heard of it.

The EI teacher we have has a scale that she goes by, but there are big age

ranges for each milestone even for regular kids.

In our county our regional center sources out to Easter Seals for some of the services. One of the things they provide is a weekly home teacher. Sometimes they are called a EI coordinator. They are trained generally in PT, Speech and OT, as well as being a sounding board for any thoughts and ideas you have about your childs progress. Here they do detailed 6 month evals and meet with us when we meet with our case worker for our six month IFSP. Some counties have them and some don't. We love ours, she has helped us so much coming up with a therapy plan for Eliza.ChiLuvCali@... wrote: I don't know what a home teacher is ? Hello

Gwyn,

I to this date have had 3 (next one this

Wed).  They did use the HELP evaluation

and she was on target with everything, now I am just worried she is not

progressing based off the assessment of this new private pt.  I am going to continue to use ECI since I have

learned a lot more than the private PT even shared with me.  That is a wonderful Idea I am going to ask

ECI to send me the copy of the evaluation so that I to can keep up with her meeting

the milestones.  My insurance did pay for

the PT, and is also paying for ECI.  Emma

is my first child just like you, my husband and I are

constantly saying the same we do not know what to except because EVERY child is

different.

We have looked at a private school that is

in Houston it is called The Rise School and she is on the wait list for next

Re:PT/ babies with DS

Do what you think

is best for your son!

The RISE school

is excellent! They have a school in Austin

also and have just added a 1 year old class. I’m thinking about putting

Mark there also.

Re:PT/ babies with DS

Hello Gwyn,

I to this date have had 3 (next one this Wed). They did use

the HELP evaluation and she was on target with everything, now I am just

worried she is not progressing based off the assessment of this new private pt.

I am going to continue to use ECI since I have learned a lot more than

the private PT even shared with me. That is a wonderful Idea I am going

to ask ECI to send me the copy of the evaluation so that I to can keep up with

her meeting the milestones. My insurance did pay for the PT, and is also

paying for ECI. Emma is my first child just like you,

my husband and I are constantly saying the same we do not know what to except

because EVERY child is different.

We have looked at a private school that is in Houston it is called

The Rise School and she is on the wait list for next year. We will just

wait to see how she progresses and hope for the best with much hard work.

I wish you all the best with Mark J

Re:PT/ babies with DS

Hi ,

Yes, I’m using ECI. I am going to

switch programs next month as we are moving to a different area of town, so it

will be interesting to see if they have anything different to say. I have only

had 1 appt so far and our next one is next week and the last with the current

OT. Did they use the HELP scale to assess Emma? I had them send me a copy so I

can evaluate Mark on an ongoing basis. That way, I know if he is meeting the

milestones and he is spot on at this point. Did your insurance pay for the

private PT? I don’t know what to think about the different evals? Is this

your 1st child? Mark is my 1st child so it’s hard

for me to look at him and say “oh, he’s not doing x so we should

work with him on that” – that’s why the HELP scale is very

useful!

I’m also going to move Mark into

a place called Sammy’s House starting in the spring. They are a day care

facility that specializes in kids with disabilities and they work with the kids

to meet goals based on the HELP scale. I can’t wait to get him here as

the daycare facility where he is now is not familiar with working with kids

with DS.

Re:PT/ babies with DS

Gwyn,

I am assuming that you are using ECI. We started ECI at 2

months. My daughter is 3 ½ months old and they have her working on

stuff like using hip helpers, mouth exercises, and a bunch of belly time.

Are you guys doing anything different. Our

lady comes 2 times a week, they suggested 1 x a month and I and my husband both

said we would like to see them 2x a week. Please

let me know. Yesterday I consulted with a private PT and she rated Emma

at a 1 month old development but when I see ECI they said she is right on

track, so I am a little confused and a little taken by the evaluation.

Anyways any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Thank you
