Penney's. Chicago resident Barrios, 38, was charged with one count of felony retail theft after she placed $1,250 worth of children's and adult's clothes in her daughter's backpack, Calumet City police investigator Marco Glumac said. He said Barrios also put merchandise in a bag she was carrying in the store at the River Oaks Shopping Center. Glumac said the daughter, an 18-year-old with severe Down syndrome, was not charged and released to family members. " The 18-year-old has absolutely no concept of right or wrong, " Glumac said. " The daughter was brought (to the Calumet City police station) for safe-keeping. " Tandra Simonton, Cook County state's attorney's office spokeswoman, said Barrios could face two to five years in prison if convicted. Simonton said Barrios was in bond court Saturday and received a $20,000 bond. She said her preliminary hearing will be Aug. 7 at the Cook County Court in Markham. Guest guest
Kathy, Another thing that bothers me about this article is that it says the daughter "has absolutely no concept of right or wrong." This might be true for some people with DS, but I do not believe it is true for most. It's not true at all for my son Mark (18). He understands right and wrong very well, maybe better than most people. We have to teach them, of course, just like our other kids, but they can learn this! And there it is again "severe DS" :-( No wonder she seems to be severely affected, imagine the kind of upbringing she has received. ette -------------- Original message from "Kathy Ratkiewicz" <Kathy_R@...>: -------------- Forward from another listIt takes all kinds!!http://nwitimes.com/articles/2006/06/29/news/illiana/c441433a8d6004a48625719b00804d5f.txtPolice: Woman uses daughter to steal clothesBY TERRIE HENDERSONthendersonnwitimes219.933.4158CALUMET CITY | Police arrested a woman Friday who they say used her mentallydisabled daughter to steal clothes from J.C.
