Guest guest
Hi Trish All your experience is surely welcome here! However, my daughter is 8 and I live in Florida! I have wondered how to keep my daughter socially active once school ends, that could certainly be challanging. On one of the other DS lists there is a father who writes in and has a 30-something daughter with DS, I think they are in CA. That list is: DOWN-SYN@... ette -------------- Original message from "andy2trish" <andy2trish@...>: -------------- I think I am in the wrong spot here since everyone appears to have infants to young children on this sight. I have been on this sight for a little while and I don't see any interest in anyone communicating with someone like my husband and I who have a DS son Andy's age. Guest guest
We have people on this listserv who identified themselves when they joined as being parents of adults w/Ds. The parents of the younger kids just seem to be the ones posting at the moment, but anyone is welcome to jump in at any time. kathyR From: Down Syndrome Treatment [mailto:Down Syndrome Treatment ] On Behalf Of gldcst Sent: Thursday, June 29, 2006 4:59 PM Down Syndrome Treatment Subject: Re: Anyone out there with an adult child my Andy's age? I know alot of folks on this list- many use supplements and nutrivene and many don't. Many have had negative experiences with it for their child and many swear by it. We tried it because we tried everything but my dtr wasn't able to tolerate it. What sort of "other" things in general are of interest to you? I'm sure you have only to throw a question out there to begin a discussion. Sherry (not a listowner or moderator -just a mom)
Guest guest
I'm here! We have a 17-y.o.at home. He's not as energetic as your son -- wish he was. Looking into maybe some vitamins or something. I wish we were near you, but we're in Tennessee. Good to know you're here. I think people with DS babies are more active, seeking out everything they can. We did that too. Guest guest
Hi Trish :-) I for one am *very* interested in hearing about about and talking with parents of the older kids. :-) I know you are not the only parent here and I was truly hoping you all would stike up some conversations. Not sure where everyone lives though. Feel free to chime in on anything the parents of the younger kids say. I am sure you have very useful insight to share! Has it been it difficult to find and maintain close relationships for your son all his life, or has it just become more difficult as he got older? What does he do for socialzing? You said he is active, I would be curious to know all about that. Another mom here in the area and myself have been trying to get a solid play group established for the kids and it's been an up hill battle all the way. It seems almost impossible to get people together with any regularity. We are finding that building real friendships between the kids takes one commodity many of us are sorely lacking- TIME! She is much more dedicated to calling people etc then I am.... I tend to go with the flow which is really not a good thing in this regard ;-) The other issue we are finding is that the kids need to be taught how to be friends, play together, care about each other's feelings etc etc etc .....so when we do get together, it's not a social time for the MOMs, but instead we have to put some real hard work into the kids. It's been paying off for our two girls who are very best friends and play together independently for the most part now. But those skills don't seem to extend to the 'new' kid entering. Even harder if the newer child has fewer social skills for the girls to 'work off of'. They don't have the ability to help them be absorbed into the group with out a lot of help. Having said all that, would love to know how things are going for your son, what has seemed to work and what didn't. Things you might change or have done differently. Things you just wouldn't have wasted time worrying about. --Carol in IL -------------- Original message -------------- From: "andy2trish" <andy2trish@...> I think I am in the wrong spot here since everyone appears to have infants to young children on this sight. Guest guest
Looks like we will talk about anything that is posted;-) Just off the top of my head, I remember reading about sippy cups (To Use or Not to Use, that is the question….;-) household cleaning agents (babies are real Mess Agents) pill swallowing cups (for when the baby gets a little older),,,a caution not to swaddle babies or keep them in positions that hold their legs together for long periods of time because that may lead to hip problems,,,special diets for kids who need them, articles about people w/Ds getting married, group therapy vs individual speech therapy for young children w/Ds…. Many of us here DO use supplements for our kids, but we do have a file w/links for information both for and against the use of supplements, as well as a ton of information in the files that would be useful for parents of babies/young kids as well as young adults.. If you are interested in something, post a message about it to get a conversation goingJ. My son is almost 8, but I like to hear about people w/Ds of all ages. Guest guest
Oh, would he fall in love with her! somebody to watch videos with, that's his idea of a perfect 10! Which ones does she watch? One of the girls at camp this past couple weeks nabbed Jeff as her "boyfriend," but sadly she is from South Carolina, and I don't know if a long-distance relationship would work.
