Guest guest
Hello Kathy, Thank you for the reply, Yes the pictures that I sent were you favorites plus the "On the Slide" 3 total. I also wanted to reply about Danny. He sounds alot like my , which turns 4 at the end of July also,30th to be exact. I also try to involve on the computer as much as possible. He usually sits on my lap and plays along, it is fun. So to hear that Danny can do it on his own at 8 is just awesome. I was curious though If you don't mind me asking, Why such a dramatic speach delay with him. I know it is alot of work with speech an everything. I work hard at it as well as his teachers and therapists. I know it takes time as well. We try and teach alot of signs also.Either way I know it will come with time. Well thanks and take care. Guest guest
Hi Larry- Actually, Danny has been able to play computer games by himself for a couple of years…he used to sit with his brothers and sisters and watch them, and one day, he just started using the mouse-surprised us all;-) No, I don’t mind you asking…I don’t know why he has such a delay in his speech. He has had speech therapy since he was 5 months old,,,did the Beckman exercises, Sara Rosenfeld oral motor exercises, traditional therapy ….he uses sign…tried Fish Oil,,,etc. Danny says many words very clearly-but the majority of his words can only be understood by people who have been around him for awhile. BUT the good news is that his articulation keeps improving. He has been able to say many new words just in the past few months…He loves to talk, can tell very long ‘stories’ in his “Danny language”..understands everything we tell him. So when I say ‘delay’, I don’t mean that he can’t talk at all, because he can…(does a good job on the chorus of “Love Me Do” ;-) but his articulation needs work. And. like you, I know that it will come in time. Danny is a very social little kid, and he is very motivated to try to communicate better. kathyR From: Down Syndrome Treatment [mailto:Down Syndrome Treatment ] On Behalf Of larry miller Sent: Sunday, July 09, 2006 10:24 PM Down Syndrome Treatment Subject: RE: NY Time Square Pictures of Hello Kathy, Thank you for the reply, Yes the pictures that I sent were you favorites plus the " On the Slide " 3 total. Guest guest
Ha, Kathy, Danny and Mac sound so much alike...I love hearing your stories. This one hit me with "Love Me Do"---we have a Beatles tape in the car and that is his favorite song. He sings it loud and sometimes clear. Constantly requesting "4"--the track of that song. I keep thinking if I work with him on it he might be able to do a lip sync or something with it in the school talent show which he wants to do--he loves to be on stage!! Guest guest
Hi Kathy, I am so glad you replied and talked a little about Danny's abilities. As of also he talkes in " Language" also and understand most everything we ask him to do. After you mentioned how Danny's articulation needs improvement as most childrens do, I can "Notice" how hard really tries to communicate with myself. He can clearly say words like, Mom,Dad,on,off, ball, juice and a few others so I am extremely blessed to have achieved this goal, as speech for them is probobly the hardest thing to overcome. I also wanted to thank Cheryl and Trish (if you see this) for sharing. Your children's experiences for me are very inspiring. Thank you as well. Guest guest
Hi Larry! Thanks! I think your little guy is simply adorable! He will talk more in his own time but the speech therapy for more than once a week is essential. He is really young but speech therapy is still a must. It takes lots of time and patience for our DS kids to get where they are. He will continue to pick up speech from you and others in his life. My daughter says that book "teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons" ought to be used now. You will be amazed at how well he will do. I just wish my had her brother to work with much sooner. Anyway, he is doing so well with his reading and enjoying it so much that it is a shame teachers don't do what they ought to with our DS kids. Don't ever think any child is too young to learn to read. The sooner the better and with results like you never thougth possible. Andy is at the age now where he is talking so much better because he lives with us (thank God!) and he is around family and friends whom he copies. Everyone mentioned to us how much better Andy speaks now that he is living at home instead of at that Group Home. It is really something for each of us in the family to hear something come from Andy that is one of our own expressions. We all mimic him too and he gets a big kick out of that. Andy loves to correct us if we say things wrong just to get him to say it right. We always know he will correct us and enjoys doing it. He says he is going to grow up, get married, have lots of kids and home school them just like his sisters. To Andy, he is still growin up and that is fine. Andy is so verbal and we see he is very proud of how most people understands him. I hate it when people look at me or my husband to ask something about my son they ought to be asking him! He understands them so they ought to treat him like they would anyone else. We always have. Andy does have to slow down when he talks to people because everyone talks so fast. He just can't pull that off and be understood as well as when he speaks slower. Since he has a thick tongue and a high pallet, well, he does very well. He has overcome so much and we are so proud of all of his accomplishments no matter how old he is. We were recently told by some parents older than we are how amazed they are with Andy's speech because their son doesn't speak well who is in his mid to late 20's. For one thing, they speak in another language and he is totally lost with that so we can see the poor guy is confused. The parents speak English but they speak to one another in another language! The brother told us his brother doesn't even speak in their language. So, we thought, well, that's why he doesn't talk to them! Perhaps when he is away from the family he speaks better than they know! It is exciting to hear about everyone's children and be reminded of how things once were for us. I love a challenge so when some would say my son couldn't do something I thought, well, we shall just see! Keep on doing all you can to help your child become all he can be and more! God Bless! Guest guest
Hello Trish, You are welcome and thanks you for the compliment. goes to summer school now and recieves speech therapy twice a week there as well as in regular school.I work on his speech at home as I have learned alot from his therapists as well as the First Steps he had recieved for a few years here at home.I agree as you said the more the better. As yourself and every other parent patience is our strongest attribute.About the book you mentioned I am going to purchase it now that I have heard several parents say that it is a tremendous help. I think that it is wonderful that Andy has you and your family now in his life. You mentioned something that I cought as funny, "Mimic". It seams that our children mimic alot of things which gives them that added great personality. I cant wait for to understand it When I mimic him which I don't think I have done.I know though he also will get a kick out of that.I also wanted to mention how I am also looking forward to the time when someone asks me something about when he is able to anwer them. Then I will just simply say "You can ask him if you like". I am pretty straight forward when it comes to situations like that. As a single father I am fortunate that was givin a better chance with myself. I will never faulter from others misconceptions about our children. I will only continue to learn from the best. When Kathy talked about Danny I could not believe how much he reminded me of my son. As well as alot of others children. It makes me really appretiate their struggles and how much better the end result is every time.As we tell our experiences others are strengthened, I believe that. I am looking forward to hear about Andy in the future. Larry M.Trish <andy2trish@...> wrote: Hi Larry! Thanks! I think your little guy is simply adorable!
