I'm not sure what the best supplement is . . . someone else can answer that.

But, I know, food related, that Oatmeal is VERY high in iron just naturally.

Hi All,

Once again I am expecting, well at least I think so ;)

I am anemic, but recall that the last iron supplement I took was not a big help. I believe it was Slow FE. Does anyone know of a good supplement to take? I do not want my OB to prescribe one, but rather take a natural form.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Congratulations! Definitely liver is excellent, and would be good for both you and the baby. So are other 'variety' meats.

I suspect the reputation of oats is partly based on their being fortified in processing, which isn't so good, a 1/2 cup of real raw oats contains 1 1/2mg iron, about 10% of RDA, so it would be at least useful. One oz. of beef liver has the same amount, and one oz. of chicken liver has more than twice that, 4mg or 21%RDA. SO a nice serving of liver would get you pretty far with the iron, as well as other important nutrients. If you don't like it very much, try making fresh pate.

As always I highly recommend eating non-processed foods, avoiding additives, and checking out http://www.westonaprice.org .

Thanks for the info, Alice! Yes, we do eat very well. I had no idea raw milk was good for morning sickness. Yeah, I am getting some delivered on Thursday.

Caroline, you are a woman after my own heart;-)

Congratulations.

Would it help to cook your food in a cast iron skillet? I have seen that

mentioned before. Don’t know how effective it is, but….

I took slow fe for months trying to get my iron up. It barely made a

difference. Then one day someone posted on the ES list that they used

chlorophyll capsules to get their iron up. I tried it and within a

couple of weeks I was back up to normal. I have no idea what the

implications would be of taking this while you're pregnant though.

CONGRATULATIONS Caroline!! When is the new one due?? Sorry no advice on iron. I just took the prenatal and ate lots of shredded wheat. :-) I tend to get real anemic when pg so the prenatal worked well for me with no problems. Normally I can not take any iron, gives me horrible diarrhea. I would be careful of liver, or at least the type of liver you eat. Get organic as the liver is the 'trash can' of the body. So if you are eating liver from an animal that has been fed lots of junk, you will be eating lots of junk too.Caroline Skalsky <cskalsky@...> wrote: Thanks for the info, Alice! Actually this is not so true, thankfully. Certainly it is way better to eat grass-fed and organic, but the is more info on the subject here:
