Guest guest
The pretzel is a good one. I like to do the original kind Rashelle does on the instructional tape where you are sitting up vs. lying down on the workout #1 tape. Also the side to side leg swing she does right after the pelvic tilt on stretch bands video and workout #1. > Hi everyone, > > Does anyone know of some good exercises for trimming the hips? Guest guest
Liz, one of the very best I have found for hips and I don't know if I can explain it or not but I will try. hunker down on you honches Kind of like an umpire does when he is completely down, and you arms are are on the inside of your legs, elbows resting on the insides of your knees and hands clasped together. after you breathe, do little pulses where you rock your hips back and forth. It is really tough in the beginning and burns like crazy, but is one of the best. Confused??????????? I'm not real good at explaining so if you have any question, let me know. P.S. I'm sure glad it was 100 instead of 1000! I almost had heart failure. If you're not careful you'll soon be so skinny you'll have to jump around in the shower just to get wet! LO L wouldn't that be nice? Hips > Hi everyone, > > Does anyone know of some good exercises for trimming the hips? Guest guest
Hi and Texas Mom, I wanted to thank you for the exercises for the hips that you mentioned to me. , I don't think that I can do the one that you mentioned because I have bad knees and ankles. I've always had bad ankles but my knees are bad because I used to do the Firm exercise tapes and they did a real number on my legs. They'll never be the same again. Texas Mom, I used to do the one that you mentioned, I'll start doing it again. If anyone has any other exercices to help my hips, please let me know. Thanks a lot. Guest guest
Hi , I wish I could help you, but I have only just started the Life Lift program and only have Rashelle's instructional video so far. I am going to be getting the other (exercise) DVDs as time goes on, but good luck, I hope that someone, or maybe more than one person, in our group, will be able to suggest good exercises for your hips. Good luck to you, my friend!! BTW: It's really great to meet you!!!! Love always, Pat pinkoperasheep wrote: > What are some exercises I can do to target my hips. Guest guest
Hi Rashelle might want to modify this one. I just wanted to jump in here and share a few exercises I just discovered that work the hips thighs and buttocks. You can use a small rubber ball. about 8-12 inches would work. mine is about 9 " and I got it for .93 cents at WalMart in one of those big ball bins they have there. I do Pilates so I uses some of those mat exercises to get to this position. lay flat on the floor, knees bent, feet on floor, small of the back glued to the mat. Ball between the knees inhale squeeze the ball during the exhale. engage the inner thighs and butt on this one Don't do too many reps as you will be sore if you do too many. inhale Now raise the butt off the mat ball still between the knees back straight , stay off the neck, use the shoulder blades arms to the side to stabilize you exhale gently squeeze the ball, engage the butt and thighs, lifting up even further, 3 squeezes you are doing pulses here and you might push a few extra breathes out as you pulse. release back to the floor on vertebrae at a time. again, you will be a bit sore if you do to many. start with 5-6 Have fun and let me know if these are something that you think works for you. Jen hips What are some exercises I can do to target my hips. I'm having a really hard time targeting that area, and I figure you girls would know best about what movements work and don't work for you. Thanks! ! What can changing the way you breathe do for you? Guest guest
Kathy had made an ortho file and asked that I repeat my 'story' so we can put it in the file. My had subluxated hips and was being monitered and when the Ped Ortho hung her films up, my jaw dropped when I realized that her hips looked worse when they were in the straight down position and were perfectly seated in the socket when in the froggy postiion every OT and PT had been telling me to place to her in. I asked why on earth I had been given the information and his reply " I don't know, it's wrong". I just could barely believe it and so he went off to get a text book to show me the chapt on hips and the cure... guess what a treatment option for subluxated and dislocated hip is??? They put kids in braces, hareness or cast them in that froggy position. A quick search of the web will yeild that same info. So if you have been told to keep your baby's hips together, don't hold them on your hips, don't let them sit in a walker or bouncer with their legs spread... ignore it ( unless of course you have Doctor who is prescribing such care. If you don't have a Dr over seeing such advice, please double check with a good Ped Ortho before you continue on. When you pull a child's legs down or together, you are literally pulling the hip bone out of the socket. I saw it with my own eyes. If you scroll down the first x-ray it shows how the hip is being pulled downward with the legs straight. Now imagine how it would look if the child raised his legs up and you can see what I mean. Add the low tone will allows the muscles in our kids to REALLY stretch, and you can see where they could be trouble. http://www.zadeh.co.uk/paediatricorthopaedics/paediatricorthopaedics.htm --Carol in IL
Guest guest
Ian started having problem with walking funny last fall. I took him to his local ped and they did x-rays of his hips. there was something wrong so was sent to his ortho in KC. Ian has Leg-Calve Perthes disease. This is NOT a DS disease but a MALE disease. It is when the hips do not get enough blood and start to deteriorate. There is not really cure but just a waiting game. it is a self limiting disease that corrects itself. Ian went back in Feb for a check up and his hip xray look much better. All the restriction that we have on his activity is no jumping (ie trampoline). X-rays according to radiologist says " degenerative hip " " cysts on each " " one socket larger than the other " and the other statement was something about the hips not being aligned properly. Guest guest
Thanks so much. That dr is a pediatric ortho, and is supposed to be very good but something struck me funny when he came into the room and told me that everything that radiologist saw was nothing, and what my pediatrician saw in his office was nothing. I figured if he could explain it away, then I'd have felt more comfortable, but he didn't, just that we'd re-xray in 2 months. I also thought, if it was all nothing, why is he re-xraying in 2 months? It just left more questions and no answers. I'll get a referral to another ped ortho and see what he says, and still keep my appt for his 2nd set of xrays. Thanks again. I appreciate it. Guest guest
Carol - here is what you posted on the DSTNI & ES lists a few months ago (I have it on my website at www.gotdownsyndrome.net/hips.html) - ----------------------------------------------------- Also- PLEASE- carry your child straddled on your hips or in a carrier where their legs are wrapped around your middle. DO use the johnny jump up , walker and exersaucers!DO NOT listen to PT/OT's who tell you to keep your child's legs straight down!!!!! That includes sitting with the legs straight out.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ used to pop and 'thud' all the time! Now it's very rare she does that. Her hips were also 40% subluxated, which means they were not seated in the socket very well. We did not get to the ortho til after her repair and I feel that I probably added to her problem due to erroneous information from PT/OT''s! At our visit to the ortho-ped I about dropped my jaw when I saw her x-rays. They took two views, one with her legs down straight & btw I held her legs and I can tell you there was NO pressure on them at all- then we took one in the classic 'frog' position. While in the straight down picture, the position ALL the PT/OT's told us to keep her in, it was painfully plain to see we were PULLING her hips out of joint!!!! When in the froggy position, they were seated beautifully!!! I asked the ortho about this and he was very perplexed as to why anyone would tell us to keep her legs straight at all times when in fact the cure for subluxation is to CAST kids IN THE FROGGY POSITION!!!!So whatever you do - DO NOT KEEP YOUR CHILD'S LEGS DOWN all the time. If youdo, you are literally pulling the head away from the socket. He said short of casting kids, you can put on some HUGE diapers to keep their legs in that froggy position at night.Also- is he walking/standing? Walking/standing is the very best way to strengthen the muscles that hold the hips in place. If he is not standing, start working on getting him to stand as much as he can tolerate. The upward thrust helps to seat the hip into the socket and will strengthen the muscles that help hold them.Another thing that really, really helps is deep pressure massage of the leg, thigh and butt muscles. Low tone is a neurological problem and you can help it by stimulating those nerve endings many times a day. You have to really apply some pretty hard pressure. Squeeze until the child pulls away. Also use lots of sensory input in those same areas- you know, rub him down with a rough towel, a soft silky material, different furs, what ever you have around the house with textures.Once I understood that keeping her legs together was CAUSING the problem and started an active program of the above with her- she started to improve and is now no longer in trouble with her hips. :-) Once she was up and walking all the time, things improved even faster. If you can find a pool with a depth that allows him to stand with his head above water and walk, go for it!! That really moved her forward fast! It supports their weight so they can use some of their muscles, there is resistance to the water helping to strengthen, and you can't beat the sensory input from the cool water!! We also used the walker and the exersaucer for more leg exercise during the day.I had to fight this whole issue again when she entered school! The PT was having her sit on the floor with her legs straight out!!!! ARRGGGG.... much better for her to sit cross legged or even the 'W' position does far less damage then sitting straight out!!!http://www.hip-baby.org/brace.htmlHere's a site with lots of pictures of the position I am talking about. If you could see an x-ray of the hips in that position, it would be clear as to how it helps and how straight down hinders.I do remember doing lots of the popping during the walking phase too.But every child is different and it did not make her cry at all. Perhaps water therapy a few times per week would be the perfect way to help him over this rough spot. Horse back riding is another way to work those muscles, and he will naturally be in the best position too.Start in the deep pressure massage. Do it as much as you can during the day.Every diaper change at least. This will make a surprising difference for him. ----------------------- Qadoshyah *Got Down Syndrome? www.gotdownsyndrome.net From: Down Syndrome Treatment [mailto:Down Syndrome Treatment ] On Behalf Of doihavtasay@...Sent: Tuesday, June 13, 2006 10:00 PMDSIESubject: Hips Kathy had made an ortho file and asked that I repeat my 'story' so we can put it in the file.
