The Cancer Connection A Healing Community of

Survivors and Caregivers July, 2005

Wow! Did we ever underestimate the impact " The Survivor Movie " would have! By

the time you receive this newsletter, it will have been out for only 4 weeks,

and yet the server that hosts it is reporting well over 100,000 hits! We have

had more than 2,500 powerful and positive e-mail messages in response to the

movie. The messages have come from every state in the US and from at least 27

other countries. Best of all, more than 4,000 new friends from all over the

world have subscribed to this newsletter! Welcome to all - we are so happy you

have joined our " healing community of survivors and caregivers. "

This little 3 1/2- minute movie will be on the internet for free viewing for at

least a year; if you haven't had a chance to see it yet, use the link in the

" Quick Links " section of this newsletter to view what some have actually called

" a masterpiece. "

We've had many requests for the movie on a CD, so we're happy to announce that

is now available on our website. We've also had lots of requests for a printed

version of the images and text as well as a t- shirt with the now-famous first

and last lines of the movie. SO-O-O " The Survivor Movie " booklet (with an

envelope so that you can mail it as a card) and a really beautiful t-shirt will

be available by the end of July. Send us an e-mail (use the link at the bottom

of the newsletter) if you'd like us to reserve booklets and/or shirts for you,

and we'll send you a notice as soon as we have them.

Speaking of July, don't forget that this is Eye Injury Prevention Month and

Fireworks Safety Awareness Month. Please, please be careful around fireworks

displays and have a happy and safe 4th of July!

With prayers for peace and healing,

and Kathy

A magician accidentally turned his wife into a couch and his two children into

armchairs. He panicked and rushed them to the hospital. He nervously paced the

hospital corridor while his family underwent lengthy surgery. When the surgeon

emerged from the operating room, the magician ran to him and implored, " Doc, how

are they doing? " The surgeon replied, " They're very comfortable, sir! "

Tips for Coping with Cancer Related Fatigue

Most patients undergoing treatment for cancer experience fatigue at some point.

According to People Living With Cancer, " Patients at greatest risk for fatigue

include those treated with chemotherapy, bone marrow or stem cell

transplantation, radiation therapy, and surgery... (Fatigue) can occur at

various times during and after treatment. "

An article on the PLWC website offers some helpful information about fatigue and

some great tips for overcoming it.

Words To Live By

Only when we are no longer afraid do we begin to live. Dorothy

A Real Mid-Life Crisis!

Most of us become more reflective in mid-life. We start pondering the " big "

questions. What is life? Why am I here? How much Healthy Choice ice cream can I

eat before it's no longer a healthy choice?

Anti-Nausea Tip

Many people find that the taste and smell of citrus fruits stave off the nausea

often associated with cancer treatment. Try squeezing a slice of lemon or lime

into a glass of ice water and sipping it slowly through a straw. It may also

help to keep a slice of lime in a dish next to your bed or wherever you are

resting or working. If you get an attack of the queasies, just hold the dish

under your nose and inhale the citrus aroma. Lots of cancer survivors have

written to us with these tips and swear by them.

And here's a super easy drink that will put needed nutrients back into your

system in addition to fighting nausea. Keep some mixed up and in the

refrigerator during treatment.

1 12-oz. can of frozen limeade or lemonade concentrate, thawed

1 cup chilled lime- or lemon-flavored sports drink

1 12-oz. can of chilled lemon-lime soda pop

Mix the first two ingredients in a large pitcher and put in the refrigerator.

Add soda pop just before serving. If carbonated drinks aren't agreeing with you

at this time, let the soda pop go flat before adding it to the drink mixture.

Try your fruits and veggies with a side of fun!

One of our subscribers sent us the link to this fun website. We promise you'll

see your fruits and vegetables in a brand new light!

Remember that cancer survivors need to eat nine fruits and vegetables a day, and

heavy on the vegetables, please.

Letting Go

One of the hardest things we have to learn to do in this life is to " let go. "

Especially as we grow older and see things that we want to make right, things we

want to " fix, " it becomes increasingly difficult not to rush right in and take

over.

This compulsion to " do something! " can become maddening when we are faced with a

disease like cancer, whether our own diagnosis or that of someone we care about.

The best advice we have ever received is to do what we can in terms of eating

right, resting, exercising, nurturing ourselves spiritually, and caring for

others who need us but not to the point of exhausting ourselves. After these

things, let go.Surrender whatever your cares and worries are to whatever Higher

Power you believe in.

In other words, give it up without giving up! This is not about giving up and

giving in to the disease at all! This is about doing what you can and then

resting so that you can grow stronger while Someone Else takes the reins for

awhile!

A friend of ours shared a little poem that we have found very comforting during

those times when we are tempted to try to " take control. " We hope you will find

it comforting, too.

As children bring their broken toys with tears for us to mend,

I brought my broken dreams to God because He was my friend.

But then, instead of leaving Him in peace to work alone,

I hung around and tried to help with ways that were my own.

At last, I snatched them back and cried, " How can You be so slow? "

" My child, " He said. " What could I do? You never did let go. "

Who are these people, and what are they doing in my e-mailbox?

and Kathy Cawthon (married 21 years and " joined at the un-hip " as their

kids like to say) are both cancer survivors. Diagnosed within six weeks of each

other nine years ago, they underwent more than a year of aggressive medical

treatments to which they added their own complementary therapies of faith,

humor, nutrition and exercise. Four years after their diagnoses, and Kathy

completed the grueling 26.2-mile Marine Corps Marathon! Today they travel

extensively, speaking at cancer survivor celebrations, medical and

pharmaceutical conferences, and at a variety of non-health related events as

well.

A Little Poetry, A Little Prayer

i thank you God for most this amazing day: for leaping greenly spirits of trees

and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything which is natural which is

infinite which is yes

Ways to help others, help yourself and help make the world a better place:

Forget the es.

Find tranquility in time alone.

Have a long phone conversation with someone who needs it.

If you do not use it, " lose " it.

Drink a glass of water while you're waiting for your coffee to brew.

Be the place where the good times are.

Give away what you want most: love, money, gratitude.

See your life as a creative process.

Meditate in a place of natural beauty.

Revere the healing power of nature.
