Guest guest
Hi - Next week, (jan 8-12) is (7 DS) will be Star of the Week in her 1st grade class. Each day, the " Star " provides the class with information about him/her and gets to lead the class in daily activities, etc. On Thursday of that week, the " Star " leads the class in a craft of some kind. Does anyone have a craft that we could do with the class related to Down Syndrome? I know about the egg lecture, but I didn't know if we could incorporate this into some kind of a craft for the rest of the kids to relate. Any ideas? I'm not the most crafty person in the world and would like to do something that these kids will remember. Thanks.

Guest guest
Hello , My name is Beth and I have a son who is 18 months old today named that has DS and two other kids: Jack age 8 and Kate age 5. I also happen to be a first grade teacher on a leave of absence from my job. One idea for you: read the poem called " Sun Flakes " (it's in a poetry book called Sing a Song of Popcorn and I could find the text for you but I'm on vacation and don't have access to my books at home) and then have the kids make snow flakes out of yellow paper, to symbolize the sunflakes. Basically you can make the link that DS is not something that everyone knows about and is a little different from the ordinary kind of like sunflakes. We're not too used to sunflakes but they're beautiful. Plus you can make the connection that each snowflake is different just like each person, but all are beautiful. Best of luck and let us know how it goes. Beth
