Guest guest
hi all - i received a phone call from barbara pitts from NDSS yesterday. she is looking to get the word out on the following and i suggested that i could share it with the list. it sounds like an exciting opportunity for the right person! sandy mom to erick (5, ds) and his 2 big sisters here is her message: An assistant reporter from Dateline NBC contacted NDSS late last week and stated that the network may be interested in airing a piece on inclusion. She asked us to provide the names of a teen (or teens) between the ages of 13 and 16 who is presently having difficulties being accepted or included in the regular school system. In other words, they are not attending regular school because the school won't allow them to attend due to their particular challenge. They want a teen who has Down syndrome, is fairly articulate and can answer basic questions from a reporter. The station also wants to interview the parent or parents of the teen and are looking for someone who can talk about the situation in a diplomatic, informative way without being too radical. The deadline for submitting these names was Monday, December 11. We were only able to submit one name. We are not sure that this person is suitable for the needs of NBC. However, there is a slight possibility that this deadline will be extended till Wednesday, December 13 (TODAY). If anyone knows of a teen and his/her parents who fit the above description please call Barbara Pitts at NDSS as soon as possible. My number is 800-221-4602 Extension 119. You may also email me at bpitts@... There is no guarantee that this type of show will be aired. The next step is for the assistant reporter to pitch a story on inclusion to the top brass at the network. If they like what they hear they will air the show. If not, there is always another time.
