Dear Friends,

This is in response to the Workshop on, " Updates and Action Plans for HIV-AIDS

Control in India.

Involving individuals NGOs and others in awareness, whether through a

participatory approach, research or through other means, is

important and can make invaluable contributions to the research results

and utilization. This workshop helps us to gain better insights and

understanding on the agenda " Updates and Action Plans for HIV-AIDS

Control in India " on common platform INDIAN SOCIETY OF HEALTH

ADMINISTRATORS .

Through this exercise we are able to highlight and share the

fact that the exact form of a community or individual's participation can

vary tremendously from one setting/study to another. In fact, there may

be instances where communities or individuals don't necessarily want to

be fully involved.

Personally I feel that we must understand how to involve PLWHA more

effectively, through the identification of factors that facilitate or

hinder PLWHA involvement, including an analysis of NGO structures and

how these affect involvement. As expected, fear about stigma and

discrimination is a key element impeding PLWHA involvement.

Through this kind of interaction we may develop the process to

establish the division of roles and responsibilities in

the research included that CBO/NGO members expected that external

researchers could provide a more neutral perspective, and that the

CBOs/NGOs were extremely busy with ongoing work and would not have

unlimited time available to be involved in the study. They also expected

that the professional experience of the local research teams should help

to ensure high-quality research, even while there has been a lot of

interest in learning more about the research process.

With Best Wishes to the participants and organizers of National Workshop

on, " Updates and Action Plans for HIV-AIDS Control in India.

I remain your comrade in arms against this menace of AIDS.
