Loriann,

While fusions into the sacrum with a horizontal rod(s) were rare back in the

old days of Scoliosis surgeries, you are certainly not alone; and actually,

there are many of us who probably SHOULD have been fused into the sacrum

originally, myself included! I was fused with a Harrington from T10 to L4 and my

problems with Flatback Syndrome began when I herniated my L5 disc in 1996. From

then until my Flatback deformity progressed to the point where I was completly

unable to look straight ahead, I was told repeatedly that the shatter L5 disc

was exacerbating mt Flatback and that, at the least, it neede to be removed

because the little pieces of disc materialy were impinging nerve roots in my

lower spine. What I really needed was a total revision; but being the coward

that I am, I was terrified of that procedure. So I opted for a less invasive,

anterior laproscopic disc removal and spinal stabilazation with pedicle screws.

Unfortunately, that didn't stop the progression of the defformity and, in the

end, I had no choice but to have the revision surgery or face life in a

wheelchair at the age of 46. THAT WAS UNACCEPTABLE FOR ME!! Thankfully, I had a

wonderful revision surgeon and the revision was a success. But there many more

like me out there in the land of cyber-scolis!! We're all " unusual " if you think

about it!! Personally, I kinda' like that distinction!! I'm an odd-ball in more

ways than that...WHOOPIE!!

All the best,

Beth
