Hi Kay,

With the EMG, they are testing nerve conduction rates, etc....and it sounds

like they found something, maybe slower conduction. This can come from

pressure on the nerve, like from a bulging disc.

You should simply get a referral for PT, then find your own person...but

your insurance may determine places where you can go.

You would be looking for an outpatient orthopedic PT dept.....which most

are. You do NOT just want the hands on treatment that is " feel good " like

hot packs and massage.

You want a biomechanical assessment.....someone to look at how you stand,

how you sit, your movement patterns, etc...to see if you are stressing your

low back and creating the disc problem. (Poor posture is actually the most

common cause, then aggravated by things like heavy, improper lifting).

You can ask if any of the PTs are " McKenzie trained " as that is specific to

disc problems.......or if they are a manual PT, which means that they do

gentle mobilization (really an osteopathic technique).

I would not do yoga yet....until you have someone work with you

individually, to teach you proper stretching, etc. A Yoga teacher does

not have the same level of training and can't really be watching the whole

class all the time. But with a good PT, it might only take about 4-6

sessions to assess and instruct you.

As a PT I loved doing this stuff because it makes such a huge difference

for the person. I had one doctor in the Uni health center tell his patients

that I was the 'posture police! "

Gale's recommendation for hanging is a good one. If you are short, get a

little foot stool...then stand on it under a door and grip the upper door

frame, then bend your knees a little to take your feet off the stool (or

even just some of the weight off your feet) and see what it feels like to

your back and leg. Again, this is just traction.

AND there she was, swinging from the OUT HOUSE door!!! ta da ta da.....

Hope you get better soon.
